Re: runners and running
It's Sunday for me. The shorter races (5 and 10k, kids race, walk) are on Saturday though.
I do listen to music, but I actually like listening to Native Deen and drum stuff while running - it helps keep me on pace. Books on tape and some of the NPR podcasts help the time go by too. But oh well, not this time. I think the beginning and the end will be fine without a distraction, but the middle will be challenging. That's also the hilly part!

Re: runners and running
My expo was today - it was cool. I bought a foot massager thingy for my feet. And get this, there was an uncle there! I don't know him that well (I've seen him at big parties or whatever) but he was all excited to see me. We were the only two desis I saw (though the expo continues tomorrow). He's doing the full marathon too - go uncle!

Thanks! I feel like such a slacker doing the half when a full-on uncle (I'm talking gray hair, balding, FOB accent etc) is doing the full.
Sally, be sure to post a race report!

Re: runners and running
I know right? I was so confused when I saw him there. The expo thing was at a hotel, so at first I thought maybe there was a meeting there and he was in the wrong room

Re: runners and running
i just got back
speechless. that was my first actual running event. it was beyond amazing. the energy was awesome.
i think i finished 6.2 miles in an hour and ten minutes..i find out exactly how long i took tonight. im just guesstimating it took that long.
but regardless im pretty damn proud of myself considering this has been my first event. it was raining, there were water puddles EVERYWHERE. i got drenched..especially my shoes. it wasn't pouring by any means but it was decently wet all around.
i am soooo freaking HIGH. when i thought i coudlnt go on anymore because of the rain, like once my shoes got completely drenched i was like, that's it..im going to end up slipping but man, PROPS TO NEW BALANCE. my shoes were awesome alhamdulillah. they are ALLL dirty, something im not used to cuz who runs outdoors when it's raining? BUT it's just a sign of my achievement. anyway the power of positive group energy is just beyond words...so when i thought i couldnt go on anymore (bc of the shoes mostly..energy level was fine) i was uplifted byt he people and little kids and BABIES cheering on the sidelines
ahhhhh masha'Allah i feel so unbelievably alive
im totally doing this again. and again and again. i know what i like doing..this is it. RUNNING IS PASSION.
im signing up for a half marathon insha'Allah.. i might not run the whole thing, i might walk
like some of the 13.2 miles but i know i have it in me.
when i got to the finish line i felt like a million dollars.
<3
alhamdulillah

Re: runners and running
i remember in the morning i woke up and thought, damn i didnt get enough sleep.. i fell asleep around 12..and woke at 5:35..and i was like, wow i sure hope i can do this..then i posted on islamica and ate some plain cheerios, half a banana, and some protein powder blended with soymilk. then i took my green tea supplements and had some water and went to meet up my group at the gym. i got there, and everyones like, yeah...we had oatmeal..and eggs..and this and that..PLUS THEY HAD PASTA LAST NIGHT..AND i had like some bread last night. so im like, damn, i sure as hell didnt eat anywhere near as much as these people, i'm going to be a wreck..but i know i dont do well on a full stomach...but then everyone was like, by the time we run the foods gonna be past digested..and i was like damnnnnnnnn i need me some food. so i ate some healthy pretzels or whatever and half of a carb bar. and then i drank some water.
and then i had tons of water during..along with lots of powerade...and at one point an entire cup of powerade fell on me, because i ran past the volunteer while trying to grab at it...hilarious.
