omg from the sounds of it, it seems identity theft is REALLY rampant..i'm kinda scared you guys..what measures can i take to ensure it doesnt happen to me???

Check your credit/bank account regularly, check credit reports etc. Don't buy things online from shady sites etc.

When all that kinda stuff happens, does the bank give you new account numbers and debit cards? I know when something happened with TJMAxx stores, my bank went ahead and sent me a new card, even though my account was fine. When something actually does happen, what do they do?

Oh yeah, don't use public computers to make online purchases, check accounts. Make sure your shred or rip up any financial documents you want to throw away. When you receive offers in the mail to open up credit cards or get checks from existing credit cards, rip/shred the papers before tossing them out. Just be extra cautious or whatever.

my bank closed my account and opened a new one for me.
and sally...just be careful about who gets your cc# or social security#. for me, it was my actual bank account number, which is on every check you write so i dont know how that could have been prevented?
but yeah like fifa said, be diligent and check things frequently and careful about your trash too. invest in a paper shredder

aww sumi inshallah it will be okay.  all this credit card stuff can be so scary at times.
while were on teh topic of credit cards adn what not, so i applied for a discover card to transfer some balance over from my chase visa. and they turned me down because of verification. called them up today to find out why and they told me that my mom is listed under my social security and not me. total BS. we gave her my moms SSN and we told her its mine but she said that thats how it came to be. i was like wow, how come NO OTHER credit card company has had an issue with this and now u do. and she was liek wed have to go througha process yada yada yada, i just told them to leave it alone and ill go find another CC company. 
and i hate when they send pre-approved offers and you apply and find out they deny you because of some reason or another. whats the use of saying "hi ur preapproved!" when ur gonna put your customer through getting their credit points taken off by running their credit check and then denying them. pffft.
