But didn't some of those societies see it as consensual (or apparently at least)?
I have a hard time believing that television and the easy access to porn has had no affect on people

informally... quite a few people have confided in me but haven't reported it... of all the different cases, only 1 actually went as far as reporting it to the police. that was the student-teacher case, and the teacher was fired.
in the brother-sister case, when the girls finally told their parents, they didn't really get the response they were looking for because their brother was the oldest son and that makes him "special."

It's also a matter of what we consider the age of consent. Is a 5 year old really able to give consent? What about a 15 year old? This has changed with the times, and it's really difficult to get a handle on these things too. Even today, victims might not even know that they were in fact abused (true of many things, not just for kids). It's also difficult to study this population because of the cloak of secrecy and access to information. People might be afraid to come forward for a variety of reasons too. It's really sad. May Allah (swt) save us all from such things.

We're not talking about "these days" though, societies have evolved... basically kind of what phdgirl said.. I mean would you consider the Prophet's marriage to Ayesha sexual abuse (astaghfirullah), we can't compare one society's standards to another.
I mean it's one thing to say "in that society, the children were never really consenting" versus "according to our standards, that's just not consent."
In any case, may Allah save us and our children from such a sick disease!

SO SO true... when you're really young and stuff like that happens, you do tend to feel uncomfortable but you're too young to know exactly whats going on. and then you're not too eager to tell someone about it because you felt like it was YOU who did something wrong.. you feel too embarrassed and guilty to discuss it.

Yeah I know, it's impossible to really put a gage on it. I'm just saying sexual abuse is nothing new and I don't think it started with TV.. People are just perverts

No of course it's nothing new...
But like violence has always existed.. there have always been wars, people hurting each other, etc.... but did school shootings happen 50 years ago? Were kids nearly as abusive? Aren't there studies that show a correlation between television and violence?
Same with sexual abuse, of course it's happened, but I can't imagine it being as widespread if the content on television was cleaner. Allahu alam.

hmmm... that's an interesting point you raise. children sexually abusing other children may have something to do with overexposure.. or they may have been sexually abused themselves.. A lot of kids who are abused go on to sexually abuse others. It's really sad
I'm gonna stop talking about this cus its making me depressed
