InshAllah, he'll be okay . I will keep him in my prayers.

Anyway, I'm kind of pissed off right, but reading Sumiyia's post has calmed me down a little bit. I don't understand why people force other people to do things they don't want to do. My uncle just called our house at 11 pm asking if I'd read a speech about his wife at our party for some Hajjis. We've invited about 65 of my father's college alumni friends because a few of them went for Hajj, Alhumdulillah. My uncle's wife didn't go for Hajj, but he wants me to read a speech about how she got some excellency award in the county she lives in. What really got my blood boiling is when I said NO because I don't like public speaking especially in front of at least 25 PhD/post-doc biochemistry smarties, my uncle said and I quote, "What kind of teacher are you? You're a dummy...." Seriously, WTF? I don't want to read the damn speech which has NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the fact that I am a teacher or the THEME of our party, which is to honor the Hajjis. Just because I'm a teacher doesn't mean I like public speaking or brown-nosing.

You should totally do it in a teacher-y way. "Okay everyone, I have an announcement! Aunty did something VERY special today! Do you know what it is? Anybody want to guess? Now remember, we raise our hands if we want to talk! Aunty got a special treat because she did ________. Let's all say congratulations together to her! Now Aunty, do you want to pass your award around so everyone in class can look at it?"

NEVER do anything that you don't want to do.....its pretty hard keeping people happy.

When I was young, I was pretty submissive and would do things that I absolutely hated and people would praise me and say that I was a nice little girl Now I say no to their face and people think I'm being rebellious or its not the correct adab.........like its their way or the highway

If I'm not comfortable doing something, then I just won't....I refuse to be submissive anymore and I'm actually happy now

I remember when we were in Yemen a couple summers ago, my cousins and I were all watching tv and some music video came on. The singer had a tshirt on with the playboy symbol on it. I told them to change it and they said they liked the singer and video. I asked if they knew what that symbol was and they had no clue lol. I explained it and before I could even finish, the channel was changed lol. Does your cousin know exactly what it means?

Feel better, displaced.

Happy birthday Laimuun!

And I will very likely end up living with my in-laws before too long. I'm worried because we've lived on our own all this time and done my own thing, so I'm not sure how well i'd adjust. But not being able to dress how I want to or sleep in until the afternoon are all things which I don't think you can do anyway if you have kids, so it's not really that big a deal.

This is the way i see it: the man I married owes his character and values to these people, who will also love and dote on my own children in a way that a parent can't. If my own parents had a son, I'd want his wife to take good care of my parents. Plus I consider it a marital responsibility to help and encourage my husband to fulfil his Islamic duty towards his own mother and father. And one day, I'd want our kids to look after us so they should learn by example, no?

So the least I can do is try and make them happy and comfortable when they need us. I don't imagine it'll be easy, but I don't think going into it riddled with negativity is going to help anyone.
