the mehndi is a separate event that has been financed for separately (and the cost of which won't drastically help out with the wedding reception-associated expenses if we skipped it altogether). and it's only for family and a few friends. besides it's a tradition, like a rehearsal dinner or bridal shower. desis aren't the only ones that do such things, btw.
thanks sumiyia and Mademoiselle for the advice. much appreciated. sumiyia, i'll contact you via PM
salika, i agreed to the shower before i realized i'd be the one paying for it.

Alhamdulillah all my test results from the bloodwork came back and they said it all looks normal. I guess it was all effects of stress and lack of sleep. SubhanAllah what a toll those things can take on one's body, even in the short term .

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
i can't believe we're gonna be moving at the end of this month, inshaAllah.
- his and her WICs and double sinks... alhumdulillah!
i can't believe the landlady's gonna be showing the duplex this weekend!
- she actually told my husband that we're not allowed to leave cuz we're such good renter peoples (mashaAllah).
i can't believe i have so much junk to clean up and pack!!!
- this means we finally have to clean up our chalk art on the (unfinished) basement floor. i'll miss the giant pink heart with our names inside!
i can't believe Hajj is just around the corner!
- i just started looking into "go phone" kinda thingies for Hajj.
does anyone know about getting a phone package to use in Makkah and Medinah. do they sell "go phones" there to use during Hajj/Umrah???
omg omg omg!!!
dua's please... jazaakAllahu khair.

I disagree mehndi's ( from what ive seen) are nothing like a bridal shower/rehersal dinner yes its a tradtion but bridal showers/rehersal dinners are usually way more low key than mehndi's are ( although your particular mehndi may differ, since your having it at home) as for what happens in other cultures i wouldnt know, that being said this really is just semantics.
You know what be really cool is if someone complied a book taliored to muslims on how to cut back on wedding costs.

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
as the resident fob, i must object to the statement made re: mehndis being the same as rehearsal dinners.
mehndis are NOTHING like rehearsal dinners. the purpose of rehearsal dinners are to do just that - rehearse. you check out the venue, meet the bridesmaids/groomsmen, figure out your role in the grand scheme of things, get a feeling for how the day will progress, practice walking down the aisle if you're part of the ceremony.
mehndis are separate functions entirely, that have no other purpose save to 1) set a day apart to put henna on the bride and possibly her female friends/relatives 2) perform all the desi mehndi rituals prior to the wedding (ubtan, et al) 3) have dholkis (in pakistan they have dholkis every night starting about a month before the wedding...it's basically where female friends and relatives spend the evenings singing songs/playing the dhol in anticipation of the upcoming wedding)...in the US, the mehndi function often incorporates the dholki spiel so it fits all in one day 4) get together for close family and friends to spend time together in an informal/relaxed setting
/ fob rant.
