if the mehndi is consider part of the wedding ...then that makes its a 3 day wedding, regardless of whos paying for what, having separate days for each event adds up the expenses.
But of course their are always ways of scaling down and still having a nice event.

Yeah, I do need a backdrop, however. That's what costs so much. And I need to find some way to get chairs that aren't hella expensive. Don't know how to decorate it myself and have it look appropriate.
|
i messaged aishamysha with details on how to make a backdrop yourself. as far as chairs, is there anything fancy looking from someone's living room you could borrow? we used our in-laws living room furniture for chairs at the valima. and for my mehndi we made the entire canopy/backdrop thing ourselves using sprinkler pipes from home depot ($2/pipe) and bulk fabric from downtown LA (about $150 for all the fabric used for the entire wedding). i'm short on time right now but if you want, PM me.

People are always talking about money saving tips for weddings InshaAllah keep your eye out and prioritize and things won't become too overwhelming financially (and emotionally).
My cousin's in-laws (for their portion of the wedding) bought fancy chairs and other random stage decor (large vases, pillars, a huge long cloth to wrap around them, fake flowers, etc) from a place called Garden Ridge (I'm not sure if that's anywhere near where you are - but google and look around for similar warehouse stores with large furniture and decorative items). They used them for the wedding, told everyone to be very careful, and returned them a couple of days later. Cheating? I don't know...but it saved them hundreds of dollars on otherwise useless purchases!
Also find some nice banquet halls (desi owned?) and see if you could rent their chairs or something for a few hours if the first suggestion doesnt work out.
For anything you need for the house mendhi - think Wal-Mart type of stores! Dollar General and whatnot can also get you random things like streamers, table clothes, fake flowers to hang around the house, candles and candle holders, trays, etc.
Make your own flower necklaces/haars. It's not that difficult (and otherwise they're outrageously expensive). Just double/triple up on thread and start sewing in the roses. Ask around in case you haven't done it before ( I haven't so I can't help out too much there).
Skip the bridal shower Your friend is being a punk if she's making you pay for everything. Maybe you could split the cost amongst a group of close friends? If not, just say you don't have time or are too busy getting other preperations ready. Maybe that way you'll get a surprise shower if not - at least you aren't in debt feeding girls unecessarily.
Salatul Hajjah

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
Dude, eloping makes such good financial sense in these times. If you want to be really scandelous, elope and have a wedding reception when you're obviously pregnant months later. For the less scandelous, elope and have the walima a week later.

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
Ya, I've never heard of anyone making the bride pay for the bridal shower. Can you imagine someone making you pay for your own birthday party or goodbye party... I agree, tell them thanks but no thanks.

Yeah thats just plan messed up..
If you cant afford the bridal shower don't offer to throw one.
But asking the bride to pay for it is...just tacky..
In other news... It feels like autumn outside!!
It feels soo special, makes me want to bake and make soups and just feed people.
And Alhamdulillah I don't feel so sick anymore.

I love slimfast! not the ready made stuff though. get the powder vanilla one.
so I'm going crazy here trying to cook dinner, plan my lesson for tomorrow and calm the screaming beast that my daughter becomes around this time of the day. I'm so not liking the husband's new work schedule.

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
I have a really bad cold and a fever. This is the worst timing ever. My neck hurts, my head hurts, and my eyes are stinging. I have an appointment for a blood withdrawal on Thursday but its not with my PCP.
My observation is Friday... please, please make duaa for me. Each day that it gets closer, I start getting even more fearful .

I was going to suggest something similar. We have pretty fancy sofas in our living room and they've made cameos at several weddings - not even my sister's wedding . Our house is near a shaadi hall that is used frequently in our community, so people have asked to use our sofas. My parents have always obliged just asking the people taking them to bring them back.

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
alhamdulillah alhamdulillah i'm feeling a bit less stressed cuz 1) the washer/dryer is fixed, 2) i now have money for groceries alhamdulillah, 3) one of my projects due this week has been moved to next week! and 4) that exam i was dreading is now out of the way....though I'm not so sure I did great (it's 40% of the grade! ) but hey, I'm not gonna think about that right now
Now I can go sleep in peace iA...until tomorrow of course. I still have a gazillion things to do but these few burdens lifted off have helped soooo much. Also, I love my friends and my mom alhamdulillah, mashallah, may Allah bless them, ameen.

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
Salika. I love it too! I use it a lot!
My dad got into an accident yesterday and completely totalled his car. He is okay though, Alhamdulillah. He's been in so many accidents of that sort and he always comes out unscathed.
He didn't even tell any of us. We just found out when my mom mentioned to my brother that Dad will need his car tomorrow. And we were like "Why? What happened to yours, Dad?"

Re: Female Personal Hygiene
this week I'm on special care rotation at the fernald school. it makes me sad seeing the people there..people hidden away from society..
subhanAllah. I can't even put it into words. I'm so thankful I'm not like that but so saddened that God has made those people suffer.
one of patients in the clinic today attacked his mother and three other patients. it's awful. it's an awful feeling of hopelessness.
