Laser Eye Surgery
Salaams
I have always wanted laser eye surgery but have been put off by my parents who freak out at the thought of it, citing eyesight as too precious to risk (which I totally agree with )
But recently I think this is getting more and more popular and I haven't really heard anything in the news about anyone losing their eyesight over it..
Have any of you corrected your vision through laser surgery?
If so, was it painful, were you told of the risks/what were the risks?
And also, why is it that opticians who wear glasses never get their eyes lasered?

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
my father did it in the early/mid nineties when it first came out and he's fine. so I'd say it's okay.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
I have wanted to do laser eye surgery for the longest time...but its my eyes! and lasers!
Contacts are great, but they get pretty annoying quick. I wish I could get the nerve to do it, but...its my eyes.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
Ya I agree with Yusuf. I'd stick to contacts untill they come up with a super duper way of doing it. (Plus I don't have the money )

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
There's nothing wrong with laser eye surgery and the risks - which were minimal to begin with - have come down considerably as associated technology and processes have matured.
My mom did it in the late 90s as well, when it was like $2000 per eye or something and she's fine. The costs have come down quite a bit as well. Its done by qualified and experienced practitioners so you don't have anything to worry about. If you have the money, go get it done.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
just make sure your eyesight isnt still changing a lot when you get it done. i'm fine with glasses (contacts + astigmatism = annoying) for now but i imagine several years down the line i'll want the surgery.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
I got it done. They'll put you through a 3 hour test battery to see if you're a candidate. My results were pretty good, slightly less than 20/20 in my left, slightly better in my right. I don't notice any difference under normal circumstances.
Honestly now I just take it for granted, I don't remember what it was like to have to wear glasses or just not see. And I think it was the best couple of grand I spent, I can't imagine doing the things I've done while wearing glasses.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
my sister had it done about 2 years ago. she has perfect vision and has never had any trouble or complications, alhamdulillah.
i think the technology has come a long way and does most of the work...so the risk of human error is pretty low. i plan on doing it eventually, iA

Apparently, a lot of the opticians that wear glasses, don't actually need them. They just wear them to act like a walking advertisement, parading around in expensive frames.
So I've heard.
It may not be true or it may ring true for sales personnel. They're the ones that make the commission on sales.

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
I've always wanted it as well, but as many have said, eyes are too precious to risk!
The other thing I was wondering guys, is laser eye surgery haraam? Does it come under 'permanently altering the body/changing the creation of Allah' E.g. Tattoos are haraam.
Any thoughts?

haraam? seriously? uh, no. it's a medical procedure to fix bad eyesight, not etch "I heart mom" on your arm.

if you have really poor vision can it really correct it to 20/20 or would you still need to wear glasses?

Re: Laser Eye Surgery
Personally, I probably wouldn't consider doing it if I was only mildly nearsighted or something. But I have HORRIBLE vision. On top of that, I'm too lazy to ever take out my contact lenses.. which is always causing my eyes to be irritated, giving me headaches, etc.
Laser surgery seems like the way to go. This year, iA.
