Default The "Ask a Doctor" Thread

Okay, I know we have a few of you them kicking around on here (or Doctors-to-be-very-soon at least) So I hope you guys humor me and visit my thread once in a while

So this is where you come if you have any question for someone in the medical profession (pharmacology included).

My first question is - what's your take on alternative medicines? Is there anything like that you guys recommend people steer clear of completely? Or are there some interesting areas that sound like they might be promising?

(the treatment I'm thinking of is acupuncture - I'm not thinking of getting it, I've just always wondered)

i read a meta analysis on the use of acupuncture for low back pain and as far as i remember the overall conclusion was that it is an effective treatment. I dont remember if there were any studies included that compared acupuncture to analgesics or muscle relaxants that are used for the same purpose. You should probably go to a doctor first though, just to be sure it isnt a skeletal problem or a nerve problem, which might need different treatments

Not a doctor, but my dad had really bad back pain a while back. It got so bad that he wasn't working for almost a whole year and he was pretty much confined to bed.

Acupuncture worked for him.

Aside from the possibility of getting infections from the needles (which is well minimized by basic sterile practices) acupuncture is pretty darn safe. If it doesn't work, you're out some money but little the worse for wear, so I don't see anything about it to disrecommend it really.

The main issue with alternative medicines in general is that their efficacy isn't proven or formally tested in any fashion and neither are their risks. People can feel free to use them, but there from a medical perspective for the most part we can't either recommend their use or urge against it. The real problem lies in people using these techniques thinking that they are getting something the techniques can't offer -- namely any sort of assurance of relief or cure (of whatever).

Asalamu alikum,

I have a question related to flu shots, when the flu shot is delivered, is it delievered differently than lets say...any other type of vaccines?

In the past, Ive observed the nurse is usually holding the syringe (at almost 90 angle) and stabs it vertically into my arm?? *ouch* whereas with other vaccines, they go a little subcutaneously and then release the syringe gently?

is this the proper technique or is that nurse who wants to murder me?

She doesn't like you.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure. I know the aim is to get to the muscle to deposit the vaccine, but beyond that, I think it's individual technique.

Infact, i have seen majority of them do it that way. *by stabbing me*..I can count on my fingers the time where *they did like me* like once or twice.. otherwise, they're there to torture me. Thanks though!

i think the proper technique for an IM injection is a 90 degree angle, thats what i was taught, at least....who knows. but as far as how fast they push the med from the syringe...that is up to the individual i guess. i think that part hurts way more than the stab.

Fatima is right.. A 90 degree angle is the correct way to do an IM shot. Good pain-free shots can be done if the vaccine vial or pre-filled syringe is left to warm up a little, then poke, inject and get out as fast as you can. I always get compliments on my flu shot giving skills.

I'll suggest your idea to her and come back for my turn when she is in good mood.

that depends on what the medication is and whether or not its sustained release, or enteric coated, etc. i wouldnt recommend it unless you check with a pharmacist about the specific drug and whether or not its safe to do so.
