Re: The "Ask a Doctor" Thread
when I take a shower, or have been in water (such as a pool) after I get out, the soles of my feet and the lower part of my legs get incredibly itchy. and sometimes, the skin turns red and splotchy. it's nothing serious and it doesn't happen every time, but it gets annoying. any reason for this? or am I just weird?

Re: The "Ask a Doctor" Thread
I need to ask how much GPs make in relation to other kinds of doctors, and other professions. Ballpark figures are acceptable.

Re: The "Ask a Doctor" Thread
Of all the salary surveys that I've seen, this one is probably the closest to reality. However, those numbers only hold true for private practice. In academics (anyone associated with a university), the average is probably closer to what they've listed as starting. So it's highly, umm, variable.

Nope. But like I said, from what I've seen, averages for take home pay are closer to the starting salaries they've listed. I think the number listed as average is pay before overhead/malpractice, so take home is significantly less. And taxes take a big bite out of that.

And I guess paying off loans too right? So after all of that... how much is left over would you guess?

Hmm, that's a good question, so I did some calculations.
Assuming, say $150,000, in the US, that's $103,090 after federal income taxes for a single person (if you make the full 401k/403b contribution). If you also assume an additional 5% state tax, it goes to $96,340. Take out another 7.65% for FICA, you have $88,537. Assuming loan payback of $1200 a month, you are left with around $74,000. I'm pretty sure I'm missing other taxes, and I haven't included things like health/life/disability insurance, which are typically deducted before you even get the paycheck.
So at the end of the day, disposable income is less than half of the salary.
