Re: The "Ask a Doctor" Thread
How does getting into Medicine work in the US?
Here in the UK, you start med school straight after school/sixthform college at 18, and therefore you're undergraduate degree is in Medicine and Surgery. You can go into Medicine after having done a different undergraduate degree but that's a different matter. How does it work in the US?
Just wondering.

lol...why do they have unimaginable wealth? they always have patients coming back because dermatologists are obsessed with prescribing antibiotics for every little skin problem on the first visit..instead of trying to nail down what mightve caused it..and then they actually keep changing meds until something works..but hows it supposed to get better if the person doesnt know what's causing it? and then theyre finally like OH HEY!!!!!!!!!!! LETS DO A PATCH TEST.

you get an undergraduate degree in any field, but you have to take certain courses to qualify for med school. you take an exam called the MCAT. then you apply for medical school

People go to undergraduate school (generally four years long) and can major in whatever they want, but they must do some core science classes. They then apply to medical school, which is four years, and then apply to residency.

just out of curiosity, would a medical-science major have a upper hand in med school in comparison to history/math major? its predictable that the material is taught from the basics, but re-learning the material should be easier, right?

I suppose you might have an advantage if you knew some of the material already, but frankly college is one of the few places where you have access to sources of formal knowledge you'll never get anywhere else in your life. If you truly want to learn basic science then by all means take it in college. If your only motivation is to get a legup in med school, then I would say you're wasting your time and resources. There is plenty of time to learn whatever you need to once you actually start studying medicine.

now it makes me think if people do like what they study in undergrad, wouldn't it make sense to continue studying the same thing in grad school instead of applying to professional school like med school? or people go to med school b/c they know with an any art degree its hard to bring food on the table? or most people who are in med school, dont really want to be there, they're there just 'coz they know they can be there? 'coz they've the grades+ super awesome MCAT scores?)

OR maybe people have interests outside of medicine and science and they explore those interests when they have the time and the opportunity.

now would they make happy docs though?
side story: I know of a 4th year dental student, he swears, he'll never touch a handpiece AGAIN after his graduation. he'll stick to teaching, rather than practicing.
