Re: Weirdest Thing You Ever Ate
Bluestar, I thought paya was made of like, bones and knee-joints and all the fat and marrow and stuff that oozes out of them, I didn't think brains were one of the ingredients.
And riad - my dad used to make us eat fish-eyes when we were little; nightmares...
Weirdest thing I ever ate - mussels in thai soup; weird texture, weirder aftertaste. Not something I'd have seconds of.

Re: Weirdest Thing You Ever Ate
really, we always used to put goat brains and goats tongue into it, that was in africa though.
Were you told your eyesight would improve if you ate fish eyes?

I have to suppress this fact when eating it or else it would never be enjoyable. If I had the time and the motivation, I would create a filter for all that "runoff" that still ends up floating around in the salan despite your maddening effort to only get liquid

You would get on with my hubby. He fantasizes about paya and parathas about once a month. Then we have to jump in the car and drive to Anam's in Bradford where they serve paya at the all-you-can-eat buffet. Can't understand the fascination myself.

I can't eat it with paratha, it has to be rice.

Re: Weirdest Thing You Ever Ate
What's wrong with eating something made from joints and bones? I'm assuming you boil the fish like mad to render the bones and jelly right?

it's sheep/goat bones. And marrowfat and all that gunk. Tastes OK, but a bit rich for me.

Re: Weirdest Thing You Ever Ate
I always thought it was called "pie"... I really used to like that stuff when I was a kid, but then I found out what it was. I dunno about joints, but I thought it's made from the hooves of... cows? Goats? I dunno.
Doesn't taste too bad, and I'd eat it if there was nothing else.
But we don't cook it too often anyway.
But you know the marrow is the best part.
