haha i've heard aunties/uncles comment on all sorts of stuff making all sorts of bizarre 'correlations'...as if desi food epitomizes creative culinary skills.
peeza? so what? it's just roti with cheese and tamatar ka salan on it.
burger? so what? bun kebab is more tasty.
have you tried it the sewaiyaan? you know it's like the ispagettis in milk and sugar.
i guess there's no please desis, huh?

Re: The Art of Baking
The hubster made cookies!!!!!! *gasp*
After much struggle, he finally got into the kitchen for the first time ever.
So of course the cookies were from a pouch but still! We're off in the right direction.

Re: The Art of Baking
The Perfect Recipe for
Butterfly Cakes or Fairy Cakes!
SERVES: 12 -18 Cakes
Ingredients:
FAIRY CAKES
BUTTER ICING
TOPPINGS
· icing sugar
· colored crystal sugar
· crystallised rose petals
· lavender flowers
Directions
1.
Preheat oven to 190° C or 375°F, Gas Mark 5.
2.
Have ready between 12 -18 paper cases depending on size. Small pie or cake tins will take standard paper cases. These cakes SHOULD be small and dainty and NOT standard “muffin” size. (However, you can make them bigger and adjust the cooking time by 5 minutes.).
3.
Cream butter or margarine with sugar until light, fluffy and pale in colour. By hand is best but a hand whisk is fine too!
4.
Beat the eggs and add them bit by bit with spoons of sifted flour. Bit by bit ensures the mixture does not curdle.
5.
Gently fold in any flour left over when the egg is used up.
6.
Add the vanilla or any other flavourings desired - lemon and orange is good too! If the mixture is a little too stiff add a little milk or juice of orange/lemon.
7.
Half fill the paper cases with the mixture and bake for about 15 minutes until risen and firm but NOT too dark.
8.
Cool cakes and then cut a slice from the top of each cake and cut this in half.
9.
Place a little butter icing of your choice on the top of each cake and arrange the “wings” around the icing - round edge facing the outside and the cut edge to the inside and angled towards the bottom - like BUTTERFLY or FAIRY wings. Dust with extra icing sugar and watch them fly away!
10.
If you want to add colouring to the vanilla cakes, pink is really good with pink icing too! However be careful, as food colourings are a majority of the time artificial.
11.
N.B. You can multiply this recipe very easily, e.g: 6 ozs of butter, flour & sugar to 3 eggs; 8 ozs of butter, flour and sugar to 4 eggs & so on! It also makes VERY good big Victoria Sponge cakes - just slice and fill with a filling of your choice—lemon curd, butter icing, fresh whipped cream & jam—the list is endless!
Try this recipe - it's tried and tested, impress others and ENJOY!

My friend makes this a lot and they turn out really good.. I've never attempted them though so I don't wanna mess up on the first shot.
I might just do persian love cake and chocolate chip cookies if I can't think of anything else.

I'm probably too late for this? but the banana pudding recipe i posted.. Ithink that would do really well.
I've also pleased desis with pineapple upside down cake and 'trifle' layering pound cake, fruit and custard.

Re: The Art of Baking
Asalamu Alaikum,
Wow..you don't get those here, I want those brownies!
I made Cinnamon Streusal Coffee Cake today, it was really good, forgot to take pics though.
INGREDIENTS
* 1 cup butter
* 2 cups white sugar
* 4 eggs
* 2 cups sour cream
* 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 4 cups all-purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 2 teaspoons baking soda
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 1 cup chopped walnuts
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt pan. In a medium bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and baking soda together and set aside. In a separate small bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nuts. Set aside.
2. In a large bowl, cream butter and 2 cups white sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Add flour mixture and beat until well combined.
3. Pour half of batter into Bundt pan. Sprinkle half of the nut mixture on top of batter in pan. Add remaining batter, and sprinkle with the last of the nut mixture.
4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean.
Fi AmanAllah

Re: The Art of Baking
Thanksgiving is around the corner and we're spending the day at my moms crib.
I'm thinking of bringing cheesecake brownies, caramel apples [with various toppings], black cherry crumb bars, and a tiramisu trifle. For little 'thank you's' I'm going to make chocolate dipped pretzels [with various toppings].
