Re: The Art of Baking
Is there such a thing as halal unflavored gelatin?? If so where can I find it (in Northern VA)?? There are so many cheesecake and mousse recipes that call for it, but I've never tried 'em b/c of the lack of pork-free gelatin.. I don't know how they'd turn out without it either.
If I can find it, i wanna make this:

yummayyyy

That's the one I used as well. It's the simplest and easiest one thus far. Hmm I wonder what it will taste like with oatmeal.

i haven't found it yet i think once they start realizing that muslims would like to make desserts requiring gelatin too, that they'll finally come out with it. i've checked local halal grocery stores and all they have is the jello imitation flavored stuff. and i dont know what an acceptable substitute is.

i put in a lot of oatmeal. about a cup (maybe a little more). it makes the cookies bake well; they don't spread out much. i like letting the dough sit for a while so the oats can soak up some of the moisture (unless im rushing). the oats make it chewy; they don't flavor it so much as add texture.

agar agar is a substitute for gelatin. Its made from seaweed or something. I don't know where you can find it, but maybe some health food stores? Its common among vegans/vegetarians.

Yeah it's like they think our desserts consist of baklava and gulab jamun.. the end ...
*gulab jamun = desi deep fried sugary balls of dough.

Re: The Art of Baking
agar agar is what they use to make the kind of falooda that's like jello.... not the kind that's like noodles. Agar agar does have a weird taste though.
