Medicare is not going to pay for most avoidable hospital acquired complications anymore. So a surgery patient who gets a wound infection or a decubitus ulcer that needs to be treated in the OR... the re-op wont be compensated. The same goes for all kinds of complications in other fields. The budget bill is going through the gears of congress and is gonna pass sometime in the next year (i dont know exactly when this stuff goes into effect but definitely by the time we start practicing).

where Medicare and Medicaid go, the private insurance companies are soon to follow.

yeah I remember reading about the upcoming changes. they need to be more balanced about the reforms as they've include some complications that may be due to the patient's co-morbidities rather than due to negligence.

I think that if the standard of care is applied to a patient and they develop a hospital acquired complication anyway, then they're going to pay for it. So if a patient gets lovenox and ICDs and is encouraged to move around and actually assisted in doing so by the nurses, and they get a DVT anyway... that isnt the medical personnel's fault, and the hospital is gonna get paid for the extra drg. at least thats how i understood it.

hopefully the rules will improve patient safety. They'll definitely make the environment tougher for doctors

Federal law states that if the patient is covered by employer-sponsored, commercial insurance then the insurers have to pay up unless the exclusion was explicitly stated in the SPD.
