That would mean they get to ask me about the towel on my head and then kick me in the shins and call me a smelly paki terrorist bomber at least once . Also, I dont think I'll have the authority to put them in detention .

Re: The TEACHING Thread
i'm really interested in elementary education in the inner city (inner city boston, specifically).
i'm an idealist, so i don't know if this would necessarily be a good idea, practically speaking. i feel very strongly about the need for better teachers in the inner city, and that is my first priority. but speaking in terms of practicality, i wonder if teaching at under-performing schools at the beginning of my career might be less than impressive on a resume. and especially since i'd only start out with a little experience behind me, it could burn me out really fast.
does anyone have any insight about whether it would be a better idea to start working in tougher areas of the city (because then i'll have seen the worst case scenarios while i'm still young and full of energy) and then maybe move on to higher-performing schools in more privileged areas later in life when i have a family to support and need to worry more about money?
or might it be a better idea to get some experience in higher-performing schools first, and then apply what i've learned to maintain high expectations? i'm afraid that with this option, i'd just melt in with the status quo and never leave.

I don't know if it's good or bad. My Aunt taught English for a few years at the probably the poorest H.S. in Washington state. She found it very fulfilling. You have opportunities with poor students that you don't have with rich kids. She found that the kids there were much more respectful towards her than the kids at the richer school she teaches at now. I don't think it's hurt her career any.

hmmm. that's interesting. i'm definitely too much of a pushover to deal with HS kids (especially since by that point they're probably taller than me ), so i'm looking more into elementary schools. but i'll keep that in mind.
like i said, right now i'm still idealistic and full of energy. it probably makes more sense to throw myself headfirst now into something that i really love. before it ends up becoming something i do to get paid (after all, everything somewhat loses its intrinsic value once you start getting paid for it)
haha... then again... who teaches for the money? it's not like they pay all that much, anyway

Re: The TEACHING Thread
Btw, I managed to dodge two weeks and have just done one week, got one week of work exp left.
They didnt ask me about the towel on my head and then kick me in the shins and call me a smelly paki terrorist bomber.
They were not that bad. My own school was worse .
I came across a bunch of rough- ish but okay kids today though, as I was leaving.
They were asking me what I was doing and what classes I was in and then I told them I was at the autistic base today and she was all like, dont they piss you off, and I was like no they're okay. Then she made fun of them and I wanted to be like, uh no you piss me off. But I wasn't.
So here's some of the conversation:
Do you like this school
Its okay actually.
Dont you think it's a ****hole
No its not that bad Ive been to worse. Do you like this school?
No its a ****hole. Actually its okay I dont mind it coz we get to mess about. We like it cuz its the roughest school in fairwater and were rough.*
Afra: On the one hand I think it might be better for you to go to a rough school, cuz when you learn how to manage the roughestyou'll manage the rest fine. Like how I went (not taught at though) to a rough school myself, going to other schools that arent great is fine cuz even when the kids think they're rough, they dont actually seem that bad. One of the teacher's was saying 'you probably wont get worse than this' and I'm like yeah I totally can, this place is nice .
Also I think the kids were alright with me even though they think they're rough and I have a towel on my head . But I reckon that's cuz I'm young and if it was an older person they probably wouldnt approach them so much. So it may be easier to get through to the kids when you're younger as they might find you more approacheable in general.
On the other hand, the thing you said about crap schools not looking good on your resume. But then again if you can show how well you've handled kids at tougher schools then that will probably show you in a good light?
