It's a rough life, and I've had my share of classmates who were completely gung-ho about gensurg -- until they did a sub-I in it.
I think you have to be willing to make the personal sacrifices the lifestyle calls for, be willing to risk work environments that are frequently quite hostile to you as a resident (especially in your early years), and most importantly be willing to let all the nonsense roll off your shoulders for the sake of doing something you love.
It sounds a bit melodramatic, perhaps, but from what I've seen that's basically what you've got to be prepared for.

its tough but inshallah not too tough. You just have to like being in the OR
at this point i'm pretty much committed, but I'm happy with the choice so far. Most of the surgery interns at our program are actually pretty happy. I think alot of the talk about how insane it is tends to be exaggerated, like the way people told me med school was going to be hell on earth but it really wasnt so bad. I just have to find a place that the residents like (inshallah again)

I agree about the med school part. Alhamdulillah the first two years have not been nearly as tough as everyone made it out to be. I often hear "your worst day in 3rd year is better than your best day in 2nd year," so insha'Allah its smooth sailing from here on out. (After the frickin boards...)

haha
nah dude, your worst day in third year is gonna probably be a day when you work long hours during OB/GYN... and if you're anything like me then your best day during 2nd year was a day when you decided to not do any work and hang out doing nothing or just having fun all day long.
but 3rd year is definitely better. good luck on the step

So, so, so true. Sigh. Those were the days...trying to sneak out the side of the hospital so the chairman wouldn't see us. Avoiding the intern we nicknamed Dopey so she couldn't scut us out. Hiding in the call room so we wouldn't have to do a million IVs.
THANK GOD THEY'RE OVER!!!

i'm '11, and I know it's way too early to make any concrete decisions, but ortho seems very interesting to me. Especially stuff like knee and hip replacements.

make sure you get a chance to scrub on ortho cases or at least observe some before you take the plunge and set up your 4th year with ortho electives etc.
are you doing ortho stuff this summer?

Re: Residency Match Thread!
Probably not. I'm just gonna head home inshallah, and take it easy. Won't be long till second year/boards hit me in the face like a two ton bomb.

cool, time off is definitely a premium commodity in our line of work
when (if) you do anesthesia during 3rd yr, see if you can get in on Ortho rooms. Thats actually a great time to get exposed to different surgical fields. When i was on anesthesia, i was in ortho/neurosurgery rooms for my whole rotation. It happened by chance, but it was pretty great

Re: Residency Match Thread!
Khairan, seen anything like this yet?
Quote:
|
A 37-year-old woman had an eating disorder characterized by frequent episodes of self-induced vomiting. She presented after accidentally swallowing a kitchen fork while attempting to induce emesis. Radiographs of the thorax show the location reached by the fork. The fork was surgically removed, and the patient had a good recovery.
