actually a lot of the people i know in med school get a few months off before residency...maybe two or three?

it depends on how you schedule your 4th year. you're right, some people do give themselves alot of time off

my husband matched last year for University of South Florida's physical med and rehab program. we're just getting through our first year. he's preparing for his step 3 right now.

I think at most schools you do, especially after the match. at my school, you can essentially be off since january/february if you plan things right and take extra, seminar-type courses in the previous years. they have some weird ones too, like a hypnosis class and something called 'healer's art' where you wear tye-dye shirts and talk about your feelings.

i could never be a surgeon. i think it takes a certain personality. some sort of daringness/guts..which i lack.. i'd be terrified of operating on someone..props to everyone who think they can do it. mA it must take a lot

Yeah, it's a huge lifestyle sacrifice for you and your family and you're in training forever (especially if you specialize). If you're not in love with surgery, maybe do radiology or something
