I keep getting A's on my exams Alhamdulillah, but participation and homework grades are pretty bad because I often forget due dates for assignments and I miss too much class When college gives you freedom to organize your academic life, most of us seem to take things way too easy.

At the private high school I went to I had classes from 8 to 3, and then after school requirements till 6, and I even had Saturday classes until noon. On average I would have an essay to write every other week, and missing class resulted in Saturday night detention for 2 hours. It was kind of like prison in that they tried to dictate much of your life and I didn't really like most of what I had to do, but it did cause me to have a good work ethic and a very high level of ability in completing tasks.

Maybe if you could be under that kind of discipline for something you love to do, you would really become an extremely productive person.

to all those ppl who say you can still get a good grade by skipping class..welll..that burns real bad when class participation is a huge part of your grade. and does nobody else have to use those clicker remote things i talked about in my original post? the aim of that evil thing is to track attendance and to make it easier for evil professors to grade you based on it.. annoying

basically in all my classes we have a quiz every class period it seems.

annoying

I've never heard of said clicky. Then again, all of my classes have always only been in rooms about the size of a typical classroom.

wow I'm amazed at how many people in this thread can miss class and still get good grades. I went to a private university that was VERY strict on class attendance and participation. In fact with many classes in the syllabus it would say if you miss more than two classes unless you're in the hospital or some sort of extreme event you pretty much fail the class.

I attend lectures that add value:

my motto is if i don't learn anything in the lecture, i dont need to be there. but in this case, i better have a friend to pass the notes on.

Many undergrads don't appreciate the value of 'face-time' with profs. Most are not out to get you. talk to them. atleast this way they'll know you're trying.

i wish i had done more of that in my last 4years.

oh I hate clickers with a passion. thats why you take classes with your friends.

whenever one of us doesn't feel like going, we just give the clicker to whoever IS going.

and then you just sleep in

not like I would know.

Alhamdullilah, one class has gone perfectly. Currently my average comes out to B because I got a low grade on one of the tests

But I'm way behind schedule in my other 2 classes.....please make dua'a that I pass and at least get a B!

What are these clickers that you speak of? They didn't have anything like that in my day.

b) Studying a diddy subject

so basically its an (evil) way of taking attendance by the professor.

during the lecture, he/she will put up sample mc questions and you pick your answer using the clicker. you get points for putting any answer, doesn't have to be right.

and yeah all those attendance points go towards a portion of your class grade.

here is kinda what it looks like:

I agree. 99% of my classes require attendance and if more than a certain amount of days are missed, we lose points. Other classes that dont specifically require attendance pretty much informally require it b/c if I were to miss more than one day I would fall behind.

Anyway I am doing bad in one of my classes, Bible class. I hate it so much, it's difficult and boring. I'm getting a D. I haven't gotten a D...in years? I dont know, I dont remember the last time I got a D! As for another one of my classes, a Muslim-Christian relations class, the professor is a stupid feminist Nazi (convert to Islam but hates on Muslims a lot) who deducts points off of papers for being 5 minutes late to class (the freaking printer broke, what could i do? My paper grade went from a B to a C )

this semester is not going well. I'm working REALLY hard to raise my grades now that there are only 3 weeks left. Inshallah..

i guess it depends on your program. pharm students at my school skip classes a lot, but usually they listen to the lectures at home. the classes are huge, around 200 students, and they don't take attendance.. they have too much to cover to waste that time. occasionally, some professors give out pop quizzes or bonus points if you're there b/c they're frustrated with low attendance

i, on the other hand, belong to a grad program where each and every professor knows your name and who you are. i can't afford to miss class. plus, grad students have to maintain a 3.0 to graduate.
