bro from this description it sounds like a good deal but one catch becomes evident. if you're gonna depend on lawyers for your referrals instead of primary care docs or whatever, and the lawyers send people to you for evaluations that will make their way into their cases, then it seems like you're going to be pressured to document for the lawyers whatever it is they want. Lawyers are gonna be more incline to refer to the guy who does what they want, right

Well, they have a bunch of rules in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

General Surgery. Why did you have to pick such a girly specialty?

You know it's girly because of the ridiculous hats they wear:

Never underestimate the wrath of a girl who spent 14 hours in the OR for a micro case.
Hey, at least there won't be an hours violation!
P.S. People felt bad for me. WTH?! This is nowhere near the worst hours I've had.
P.P.S. I still think it's hilarious that orthopods are the only guys who wear the bouffant.

Re: Come here for Medical School / Residency Advice
Medicine is truly a small world. My dad got a consult yesterday from a guy who I knew from my sub-internship (he was one of the interns). I met the guy on the east coast, my dad met him on the west coast.

Re: Come here for Medical School / Residency Advice
Man, I have no idea which specialty I want to do. I'm vacillating between a few fields, namely forensic psychiatry, emergency med, and PMR.

Re: Come here for Medical School / Residency Advice
call me formal, but I don't think I could pick anything that requires me to wear scrubs all day. currently I wear nice casual pants and a shirt to get to the hospital, only to change and look like a bhunghi with a stethoscope the rest of the day.

I my scrubs.
But yeah, even for me, I sometimes want to wear regular clothes to feel like a "real" doctor.

Another thing you have to take into account is how much you make after malpractice. Malpractice for ob, for instance, can range into the hundreds of thousands per year, and that comes right out of your salary if you are in private practice. I can't comment on forensic psych as a field because I don't know much about it, but these are some things to consider before you go nuts with the numbers.

Plus, salaries are cyclical. Just because something is well-paid now does not mean that it will be the case in a few years. For example, plastic surgery used to be very well paid and general surgery was "meh". Now, the landscape has changed because of the economy and because so many general surgeons were specializing. Now, some of the general surgery offers are more attractive than sub specialties. The balance will probably shift again in a few years, so it's better to do something you like versus chasing figures that may or may not actually apply.
