Re: Come here for Medical School / Residency Advice
people always warned us about unnecessary drama on the floors, but I didn't think it'd start from day one (orientation). any thoughts on how you'd handle this situation?
there's three of us on ob/gyn, and we were asked to split the call schedule up. because of required lectures and uneven distribution, it ended up that each of us could only do 4 nights of call instead of 5. when we told our resident, she made a face and sarcastically commented, "ok............if you want to." so we started off on the wrong foot.
after the orientation and tour, the resident forced us all to go home except the student on OB because she was the only one who had a patient she could see. so the other student and I went down to the medical education office and grabbed our stuff to leave. as I was walking out, the administrator stopped me and started asking all this stuff about why we were leaving so early on our first day and why the other student stayed. The administrator then went ahead and called the director of medical education (one of my resident's supervisors) and told him everything. he then had a talk with my resident over the phone, and from what I know, my resident was pissed. the resident called back to the med education office wanting to know which one of us two students told, but the med admininistrator didn't give names.
so now the other student and I are in this awkward position where the resident got in trouble for our actions, even though all we did was do exactly as she had told us to. either both of us are screwed, or if she finds out that I was the one who was involved in all this, she's going to hold a grudge and evaluate me based on this one incident.
hate this feeling of not being judged on your knowledge, character, and work ethic, but rather what other people did and you get blamed for.

get used to it...
sucks that some pencil pusher with nothing better to do got you into trouble. The most likely outcome is that your resident will now be very strict with how late he or she makes you guys stay and so on... (which is a massive bummer)
Think of it in terms of your grade- who determines it, how its calculated, etc. Is this something that is likely to have an impact on your grade or your future career? Hopefully not. If not then dont sweat it

Ahahahaha, welcome to medicine, where people act like mature grown ups all the time.
My advice? This is ob/gyn... unless you feel very strongly about making a career of it, don't take this extraneous crap very seriously. Just show up on time, take care of your patients, do your work, and concentrate on learning on the floors, in the OR, and for the miniboard (case files rocks, btw - should be all you need for this one). My ob/gyn experience was miserable, including residents who had no interest in teaching us (or taking care of their patients), a nurse who assaulted one of my friends, and the most verbally abusive attending I've ever run into.
I still survived. Just remember - this too shall pass. And if all else fails, rip them apart on the evals.
P.S. I wish I could tell you it gets better. However, the final two years of med school taught me that people are extremely petty overall, and many people will take out their resentments and disappointments on you. Remember, it's their problem, not yours; your duty is ultimately to ensure your patients' well-being; and you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Not everyone will love you all the time, but you will be far better served by keeping out of gossip, getting your work done, and being super-polite at all times - make other people's jobs easier rather than dwelling on every injustice, and your life will become easier. People are crappy, you don't have to be.

Re: Come here for Medical School / Residency Advice
the second day of my husband's step 3 exam, the computer malfunctioned and shut down on him, so a big portion of his exam was gone. the people there said they would allow him to re-take his step 3 for free at another time, but my husband declined and said he would just continue with his exam cause he didnt want to drag it. they made him sign a paper saying that he would not blame them if he failed the exam.

OK, so you know one step: planning.
Let's see, I graduated from college, did a graduate degree, worked in a corporate office, got into med school, got through two years of intense basic science education, did another two years of intense patient care education (where I performed excellently, alhamdulillah), and ended up in the top third of my class with board scores in the top 10-20% nationwide. I was one of the top 3-5 students in my year to apply for my specialty, and I planned my residency application process very diligently. All processes which require significant planning capability, I'm sure you'll agree. However, I still didn't match into a spot and had to scramble for a temporary spot. I'm currently two weeks into a residency at a place I love, and I'm already laying out plans for a research project and for finding a permanent position (here if possible).
So not only have I learned about how to plan for the future, I've learned that even the best laid plans by the most competent people can go awry. Additionally, I've learned how to work around those unexpected setbacks with substantial backup plans. That was the advice I was imparting to Jaysh.
