Chicago Post Office Career
if you or anyone you know is interested, the starting pay is $20 p/hr, full benefits, a job for life and every holiday off. By Law they have to give you the two Eid's Off, which wont count against you for any sick days. Plus, if you have a college degree, you can move up pretty quickly into the corporate office, in anything from I.T. to Accounting. Internal Employee's have first dibs on those jobs, and they pay upto and over $100k a year. And since not many postal employees have college degrees, your chances are very good at landing one of those jobs. Let's try and get more of our community into those high wage jobs, especially with a recession in the private sector looming once again. (more like a depression for Chicago).

I just want to mention, even though its a federal govt. job, you dont have to be a citizen to apply. you just need a green card at minimum and a h.s. diploma or G.E.D.

There are plenty of PCAT study guides available online.

no they dont. you have to either buy a study guide or get one from the public library, which is what i did. the exam itself is pretty easy. its just address checking, matching two addresses. coding, and matching the code guide. the tricky part is the memory. they test you on the coding guide by memory. but the study guide has some tricks on how to pass the memory section. the trick to getting hired is scoring high, very high, like 90% and the exam is timed. you have to fill out as many as you can within a few minutes per section. but this is the way to the corporate office jobs. cuz once your in, im guessing after three months, i could move up into thier I.T. dept. depending on the openings that are available, and internal employees get first dibs on those jobs. its pretty hard to get those high wage i.t. jobs if your not an internal employee. which is why you gotta do all this first. they just want you to know how the company works, which is why they prefer internal employees. the good news is that not too many people who work at the post office hold a college degree. so there isnt too much competition there. in fact just to view what openings are available, you have to enter your employee I.D. on the u.s.p.s. website.

ah i see. good luck on the test. Does the test performance determine where you get assigned and stuff like that? Do mail carriers have lower test scores than people who work at the post offices or the HQ?

no. it only determines if and when you get hired. the higher the score, the more likely and faster you will get hired. and veterans get an additional 10% automatically. and they only hire people who score 80% and above, because those scorers fill up the jobs fast. one you pass, your name is put on a waiting list. then they call you in for an interview based on your score. first the people who scored the highest and then downards. and no, about the mail carriers. this exam is for the 473 battery. it is for mail carrier, postal clerk, and wharehouse distribution. they all get paid the same,a nd they all have to take the same exam. the exam isnt to determine knowledge, its to determine skill. how fast can you correctly do certain tasks.

Re: Chicago Post Office Career
so someone on here who doesnt want to tell me who they are, had messaged me and informed me that 20,000 people are registered to take this exam in the chicagoland area. my god thats unbelievable. they also say that they heard that there are only 100 openings, but i doubt that figure, i think its much higher. my mailman told me that there are going to be massive retirements this year and its going to open up.
i also applied for the electronics technician exam as well. its alot harder, because of the electrical math. i had learned it in college, but i cant remember it now. now i have to study it all over again so ill be prepared for that exam as well. my goal is to get my foot in the door so i can move upto thier high paying I.T. dept, because they give inside employee's first dibs on those jobs and you need an employee i.d. just to even view those type of job openings off the usps website. and the best part is, the job still pays decent while waiting to move up to a higher position. this exam would probably be easier to get hired, since not many people can do this type of math, its even kinda hard for me too, but i somehow understood during my math classes in college. its basically 'and' / 'or' math. basically how to calculate a negative electrical current against a positive electrical current and the probabilities involved in that. ya that was a mouthful right there. but you only need a 70% to pass that exam, and since not many people take it, if you just score a passing grade your more than likely to get hired. an E.T. basically deals with the mail processing machinery and other equipment.

Just don't bring up the shooting spree. They'll fire you on the spot for that. I know this sounds stupid, but I'm being serious.
