Medical and Dental Muslim Dawah Group?
Asalaamu 3alikum,
Im searching for a muslim non-profit organization whereas they'd provide provide health care to developing countries. If there are any muslim agencies that do exist and provide an opportunity to go world wide please do share. Few years ago, I heard city of Chicago has/in process of organizing groups like that?
I know of Dentists Abroad only.I dont plan on joining them anytime soon, but I'd love to know more about agencies/organizations like that. iA.
On a side note: I also acknowlege the need of our local communities, yet we also can't neglect the responsibility to the greater ummah...[not a suggestion to drail from the orginal topic.]
Jazakumullahu Khairan.
Google, my friend helped me with discovery of a rather useful site : Medical and Dental Missions Directory

Re: Medical and Dental Muslim Dawah Group?
There are plenty, but I don't know about any specific Muslim organizations.
Doctors Without Borders travels everywhere. Remote Area Medical also travels throughout the world, specifically to rural areas, even going as far as having doctors, dentists, and nurses parachute in. They have a US program to set up camp in places like Appalachia.
Insha'Allah, I plan to work with Smile Train or Operation Smile once I finish my training.
I also want to learn how to fly an airplane, so I would love to fly around with a plane full of supplies and just go to local hospitals to do surgeries.

thankyou for listing some great ones! Smile Train wow, miskins Al though, Cleft surgeries sounds cool, I had a friend who had several surgeries to repair her mutated cleft? Anyhoo, I really hope these youn' ones find a shifa inshaAllah.
I know this sounds flimy and all that..but do these organizations ever struggle financially? if so..then how do they manage? [considering they're all non-prof org]
b) also how is a recent grad suppose to pay back school loans if they decide to volunteer with such organizations?

While taking one of the dental classes he attends periodically to keep up to date on the latest technology in his field, Lassin heard about twice-yearly dental missions to Vietnam..
But it wasn't so easy; there was a long waiting list for good Samaritan dentists who wanted to fix Vietnamese kids' teeth.
Then, a patient of Lassin's who is a pediatrician told him about Operation Smile, suggesting he go on a surgical mission. Lassin applied and, in July 2005, was tapped for his first mission to China.

I sure hope, not all of the organizations are that difficult to get in? Would you sign up a head of time?

The ones I listed are all pretty well-known, so I don't think they're struggling for money. Plus, the people on each mission pay for their own expenses, so the organization really gets to spend money on patient services.

Most people do it part time, eg, do one ten day trip per year. One of my mentors does a trip every few months, but she's well settled in her career. A lot of practices, like hers, will negotiate on letting people take time off for to travel for stuff like this, since it's good PR for them too.

I don't think they're that hard to get in to - perhaps there are more for doctors? From what I've seen, they're always looking for docs to go. But I have enough connections even at this stage that I could probably tag along for a mission (if only I could afford my own expenses ). Plus, with some of the organizations, they'll help you organize your own trip if you have enough people.

I think the major problem is when we [refering to myself] are motivated to make such glorious commitment like that, we are not financially well off and still burried under school loans as recent grads, * when we'll be completely settled into our careers, our family life and responsiblities would be possible obsticle on the way to make that smooth landing on our dreamland. why is life so fair?
A catch 22. * IA

Maybe Red Crescent, not sure if it falls into exactly what you are looking for.
