Re: How early do you get to work?
earliest I've ever had to be at a hospital is 5:30 every morning for a couple of weeks of gyn
it was only bad because it took a one-hour commute to get there, so i was waking up at 4 AM every day

On trauma, we were supposed to start around 6am to pre-round for 7am rounds. In reality, we got there between 4:30am and 5am to pre-round. We usually got done by 6-6:30pm, with overnight call every 4th (sometimes 3rd) night. They had a 30 hour continuous work exception, but I know at times I was there 33hrs straight, with about 20 mins of sleep over that time (not counting the times where I fell asleep writing my notes, rounding, standing in one place, etc ). No one made 80hrs/week that month. I figured out that I averaged about 100hrs/wk. Yeah, major violations.
Of course, that's also where I got to do crazy stuff like hold pressure on a guy's arm so he didn't bleed out from the axillary artery and vein he slashed open while jumping over a razor wire fence. He was lucky the cops were right behind him.
P.S. Doesn't it make you feel safe that when you're in the hospital, your doc may have been awake 30 straight hours? I managed never to fall asleep on the way home, although I did close my eyes at a few red lights.

It's exciting, in small doses. Unfortunately, it comes at you so quickly that you don't have time to think about the magnitude of the suffering you're seeing every day. Over a month, it's actually a kind of punishment. You have to detach or you go crazy. I don't understand how people can spend a lifetime doing trauma.
Ah, the stories I could tell.
-guy who got run over by a truck just months after having a stroke
-sisters who got head injuries after their car was rear-ended by a teenager on drugs
-toddler whose babysitter accidently backed over him with her SUV
-a John Doe who died in the OR a month after running into traffic (we were never able to identify him)
-donorcyclists galore
-folks who shot/hanged/etc themselves
-folks who were shot by other people
Donorcycle - n. a motorcycle. Refers to high likelihood that motorcycle riders involved in traumas are more likely to die.
Dude Brothers - two fictional brothers, This Dude and Some Dude, who go around shooting "innocent" victims. Together, they're known as Two Dudes. Typically referred to by a gang member after he's been shot: "I was doin' nothin'. I was sitting on my front porch minding my own business, reading my Bible, and This Dude/Some Dude came and shot me."
Two beers - the number of beers every patient involved in an alcohol-related automobile accident claims to have drunk before the accident.
Two dudes - The usual answer when doctors ask a patient who beat them up, as in "I was walking down the street minding my own business when these two dudes jumped me for no reason." The implication is that if it were only one dude the patient would have won the fight.

Re: How early do you get to work?
my manager: Blue, you're late AGAIN, four times in one week?
me: A wizard is never late, a wizard is always precisely on time.
my manager: *stares blankly*
The other day i completely got off on the wrong stop and had no idea where i was because my head was buried in a good book (eric by terry pratchett). The sidewalks were all icy too and i kept on slipping, it was funny.

Re: How early do you get to work?
Anywhere from 8am-4pm, working usually 7-9hr days. So if I go in in the morning, I get off late afternoon early evening. If I go in in the afternoon, I get off late night or at times early morning [1am ].
