I'm trying to be a freelance writer. The writer's I've talked to have all told me that if I have an idea for an article I'd like to write, I should send a letter of inquiry first. Does anyone know how to write a good letter of inquiry?

When I took Magazine article writing, my teacher taught us how to write one. You should explain what the article is to be about, how you are going about getting the information and why it would be worth them publishing.
You should have the name of the editor because that shows that you are aware of the publication. Also, read it and make sure your article is something that they would publish. Don't sent a leather article to PETA, you know?
This was for magazines, but I'm sure it's the same for all publications.

How do I learn the name of the editor?

If the publication has a website, you can search for the editor's name there. Or, if you have a copy of he publication, the editors names are usually in there with contact information. If you are not sure which editor to send your article to, call them and ask. You don't have to talk to the editor themselves, but it can't hurt, anyone at the place should know.
