Not true. Most muslims in America are middle to upper class.

Re: Who here grew up poor? - i didn't, knock on cyberwood
Growing up with next to nothing shaped how I think.
Shaped My Ideals, how I do things, my outlook and life, and led me to Islam.
Grew up with nothing, Single parent, moved around a lot as a kid, currently live in a house filled with relatives.
Went from Baptist to AME, AME to Atheist.
Under Atheism I was a cute little anarchist, then went to communism, Found Islam, Became a socialist.
No one deserves to be alone, No one deserves to have nothing.
Especially when some people have everything.
Inshallah, One Day my mark on the world will be permanent.

MOst Muslims from Immigrants are Upper to Middle Class. Like G5 said, many Muslims do hail from Inner city areas, especially where he is from.

If so lets here your circumstances. Like guesstimated net income of parents. Number of siblings. Lack of food, warmth, healthcare etc.
Also I want to hear how you lifted yourself out of your position, assuming that you have done so.

I don't speak chinese, chino friend. But I was poor as fwck. I was so poor growing up, if I wasn't born a boy I'd have nothing to play with.
I simply took out as many loans as I possibly could from the government, went to school. Invested the leftover loans, and the interest rate was so low, that I made more money by investing some of those loans then anything.
I made some good real estate investments after wards, which paid off. The rest is history.
Getting the know people, networking in general is the best thing that can help a poor guy.

Re: Who here grew up poor?
born into poverty...raised by a single parent... it gets tough esp. if you're the only child... no role models ..little moral support... there are no siblings to bail you out.
living in poor neighborhoods infested with negative traits... can't get to the local grocery store without being offered drugs... at one time, lived in neighborhoods [Flatbush & Church Ave, Brooklyn] where I had to carry change in case I got jumped - that was my ransom money. Riding the # trains in NYC, keeping your head down to avoid eye-contact that could result in beating. going to inner city schools, not being able to afford air nikes /brand name clothes, and getting alienated and picked on as a result. those were some of the toughest years.
after college/work - i can finally afford to live in safer communities but still not where i want to be.. still going to school & working

Re: Who here grew up poor?
I'm from a working-class family, so I guess that would be considered poor by some people . I have 6 siblings. I don't know about most Muslims being middle class because my neighbourhood is mostly working class Muslims. Most of the Muslim guys are drug dealers and getting into trouble with the cops a couple of them have died to gun violence.Overall I dont see my childhood as bad eventhough we were not rich I had fun, I guess it was the same as richer people without all the extra stuff and getting chased by neighbourhood homeless people.
