I find it strange that people can put so much effort into running like some demented dung beetle but be unable to sit down and develop their practical intellectual skills.

Re: Does running marathons make people interesting
Training takes up a lot of time and is a big commitment, so I can see why he would talk about it a lot. It's more of a mental test than a physical one, so talking about it is a way to force yourself to do it to get accountability. I've only done a half marathon and think the full is pretty impressive. I don't know if it makes one more interesting or is a way to spark a relationship (unless perhaps the other person is also a runner). Mr. PhDGirl was certainly proud of me, but it's not like he looked at me in a whole new way or anything.

Re: Does running marathons make people interesting
I can't fathom the mindset of anyone who wants to run a marathon just for the sake of running a marathon. There's nothing interesting or exciting about it whatsoever.

PhD it was his conversation ice-breaker several weeks AFTER the event. So clearly it was something that he felt would make him an interesting Rishta prospect.

The training takes a long time, so there was probably a hole in his life when it was gone! I do think it was lame that he showed off his medal though. Not only is that dumb, but desis as a whole aren't impressed by stuff like that. I ran for a charity and gave my medal to them (it was for a Children's hospital and they give them to the kids). It's not like I'm going to do anything with it.

In this case his actions have confirmed that he lacks self confidence.
The strange thing is that he showed the same approach to his career. He worked hard to make partner in one area that he liked but is now stuck there.
I suppose there's something to be said for developing a balanced approach to life

Maybe it was interesting to him or he thought girls would find it interesting. Why do you care? You sound kind of jealous.
