I don't watch such shows. I think watching the like can have a really detrimental(sp?) effect on one's state of imaan.I do know some friends who watch it.

Well, if you look beyond the sleeping around and nasty talk, it's really about being an independant woman. All four are successful, strong women who have difficulties finding and trusting men, because they're strong and successful. You'll notice that careeroriented, urban women constitue most of the show's fanbase, and that says a lot.

Either way, so you don't get the wrong impression , I don't watch the show. There are better ways to spend your afternoons

What I don't get is why it's shown on Paracomedy...it's not funny

In the UK some feminist comedienne said SATC is like the test of how much of a feminist you are...if you can watch a bunch of women talk about such things frankly, sleep around, experiment, etc, etc, and not feel uncomfortable then you're like a true Feminist...otherwise you're a rabid, bigoted mysoginist. Nice choice.

True, maybe that's the thing, no matter how independant a woman appears to be, she will always be bound by the strains of her sex. It's quite ironic that many shows with so-called successful, strong women, the women are portrayed as weak and desperate. Just look at Ally McBeal.

I think some women have misunderstood what feminism is all about. Feminism is not about sitting in a god-for-saken café, sipping frapuccino and talking about men you shag. That's like reversed mysogyny.

It is hard to tell!
I, for one, am fed up with the angry-feminist-comedian-stereotype who rants about past lovers, sex and pms why?

hmm..i know plenty of muslim women that watch it, so i really think there are tons of closet fans on here. fess up, ladies. in fact, i know quite a few muslim guys that watch it, too.

while i do agree that it tends to get a little too raunchy, there is an element of universality in the show regarding relationships and how women perceive them to be (versus how they actually play out in their lives). for us older women on here..who here HASN'T dealt with a guy that had commitment issues? or a guy that was totally into you, but just not..for you? got married to the man of your dreams, had the 'perfect' wedding..and realized..there was something still missing? struggled between having to make choices (that we essentially shouldn't have to make)...between marriage/kids and careers? worrying that picking the latter will result in you remaining single for the rest of your life?

come on. you all have worried/thought of those things. if you look at it as a comparison and not as a reflection of your lives, it fits just fine. i bet in all of your circles of friends, you have similar characters...one thats gung ho about her career, one thats daydreaming about getting married 24/7, one thats a total flirt, and another thats kind of bounding and rebounding between the marriage vs. career choices constantly.
I've seen maybe 2.5 episodes of the show (one full episode and the half I saw were both about the brunette woman getting married... one time, she had a Scottish wedding and one time it ws a Jewish one) and I agree with Qudsia. It seemed to be more about their relationships. Particularly their friendships.

The end of each episode, there was a message that your friends are your support system. And aren't they all lucky to have each other through thick and thin? It was cute. Very little sex.

I've never watched it, high heels and lipstick just isn't my thing.

I can appreciate that it can address a lot of issues that people experience in real life but i don't think that's particularly useful. TV shows make people think that there's a particular/desirable way to react to a situation and most often inhibits one's individuality of making sense of it in their own life. It also gives people a very self-centred focus where they focus on everything that surrounds them and has implications on them and I feel that's also detrimental to one's pursuit of knowledge and awareness of more global issues.
