Re: Question for the Girls - Sex and the City fans
Ive watched a few episodes.....and I think the appeal is to women....is that it makes career women feel better about choosing a career over marriage/kids.

I can answer that
men are power hungry....to watch a movie about someone, anyone, whether good or bad having some form of power over another through violence indirectly satisfies this animal urge to conquer.
Plus it gives them ideas for when ever they catch themselves to be in a similar situation....you know like if they have to jump off a building, land safely, reload and shoot enemies waiting for them on the ground....

"There is no difference whether you have a basketful or a small piece. They all taste the same," Hodja remarked.

No... I know why now. But I'm not gonna post it until I find some all-night take out.

Re: Question for the Girls - Sex and the City fans
a cultural movement? good Lord. it's a crappy show, with parker's character making shallow observations on life every once in a while. not even life so much as new york. not that new york is like that, i'm sure.
i dunno what else to say other than, it's a crappy show.

Yeeeeh, I'll bet there are dozens of closet Sex and the City wathcers around here.
Anyway, I figured it out. Like many a lucrative enterprise before it, it makes its money by playing off of one's fears... womens' fears to be exact.
One of the most deeply rooted fear of a girl is to end up a lonely spinster, watching all of her friends happily married with their flock of spawn. This show makes that outcome (which is becoming ever more likely) seem okay. Not just okay... but cool. So it's like a balm for the fear of spinster-hood.
I'm so smart.

So what do they say or do in the show that is so revolutionary or liberating etc? Every time I click past it, they're just sitting around drinking coffee.

I've watched a few episodes (i.e. 2 seasons )..don't care for it. they're just a bunch of crude middle-aged women skanking around.

Re: Question for the Girls - Sex and the City fans
I've seen the show and it's kind of "meh". I don't see the big deal about the movie either and don't plan on seeing it. If it comes out on cable and I'm home, I might watch, but all these people I know are going to pre-parties and things and I'm not at all interested.

Re: Question for the Girls - Sex and the City fans
hmm..i know plenty of muslim women that watch it, so i really think there are tons of closet fans on here. fess up, ladies. in fact, i know quite a few muslim guys that watch it, too.
while i do agree that it tends to get a little too raunchy, there is an element of universality in the show regarding relationships and how women perceive them to be (versus how they actually play out in their lives). for us older women on here..who here HASN'T dealt with a guy that had commitment issues? or a guy that was totally into you, but just not..for you? got married to the man of your dreams, had the 'perfect' wedding..and realized..there was something still missing? struggled between having to make choices (that we essentially shouldn't have to make)...between marriage/kids and careers? worrying that picking the latter will result in you remaining single for the rest of your life?
come on. you all have worried/thought of those things. if you look at it as a comparison and not as a reflection of your lives, it fits just fine. i bet in all of your circles of friends, you have similar characters...one thats gung ho about her career, one thats daydreaming about getting married 24/7, one thats a total flirt, and another thats kind of bounding and rebounding between the marriage vs. career choices constantly.

Re: Question for the Girls - Sex and the City fans
I'd much rather watch "Ally McBeal", which explored similar issues about successful thirty-somethings (not necessarily just women, either) and their hang-ups about relationships/family/career, in a way that was much more humorous and more fun to watch, and this over a decade ago.
In my personal opinion, Sex & The City wasn't saying anything new, and to top it all it's tasteless and cringeworthy with no redeeming features about it whatsoever. It's not funny, it's not particularly insightful or intelligent, the dialogue is highly contrived and the women are fugly.
