I've heard pro-environment messages from some Muslims, and I feel that Muslims should regard caring for the environment as a good deed just as we regard ibadah and kindness to others. The concept of conservation and not littering is a part of our deen, and that concept should be expanded to include all things which we can do to take care of the earth.

I think in time the American Muslim mentality will come to include environmentalism as an important priority.

I see it more in terms of geographic locations. In my city we're a bunch of consumption crazy hicks. There's nothing really organized to handle recycling or anything.

In British Columbia on the other hand... it's almost a provincial offense to throw an empty can into the garbage. So here the Muslims probably don't do it so much, and on the coast, they recycle and compost, bike etc.

in my town every house has a recycling bin and a truck comes to empty it once a week or so. I put newspapers/magazines/white paper in there among other things. I wish we got mailed a list of things that can be recycled though, sometimes I forget. (can cardboard and aluminum foil go in there?)

I'm a packrat so I save seemingly useless things that might come in handy someday and they always do. (like those blue caps on water cooler bottles, came in handy for holding different colors of paint).

a local charity picks up donated clothes from our house, you just have to bag them and give them a call.

and speaking of recycling clothes, I've never bought vintage but I like wearing things that belonged to my mother or aunts. Several of my coats were my mother's when she was my age. Luckily she kept them in good condition.

My parents have solar panels on their roof. But I think it is regional - just as a weird example, our city-provided recycling bin is the same size as the trash bin, whereas in our old city, the recycling one was tiny. I think it's just expected in some places and not others.

Edit: And hybrid cars are encouraged, by virtue of the fact that their owners can drive in HOV lanes even without passengers. A big help in rush hour traffic.

i recycle and try to conserve energy and water (except i take excessively long showers)

i saved all these batteries for years because i wanted to recycle them, after learning that throwing them away leaks mercury into the ground (and ultimately the water)

i couldn't find any place that recycled batteries, so they just lay around for a year or two. i hid them from my mom, who kept threatening to throw them away. finally, when i went away to college, i found that a nearby school (brandeis, full of jewish hippies) recycles them.

this is why we should try to cut down on plastic bags.

^plastic bags on ground = poisoned soil

when you go to the grocery store, take a cloth bag and carry the groceries in that, if you can. and if you HAVE to use plastic bags, don't let them put the groceries in double-bags... it's especially pointless if you're carrying the bags home in a car trunk or only walking a short distance home. also, try to reuse those plastic bags in your trash cans (this is second nature, because my parents always used to do this, being cheap and brown )

My mom recycles everything. We fill up both our blue boxes every week, plus sometimes theres an additional box or two. My mom will yell if she finds something that can be recycled in the trash. So I guess you can't really stereotype.

Where my parents live they have recycling bins. There's a green one for plastic and paper, and a brown one for garden waste.

But not in London. In London there aren't even bins. People put their rubbish in plastic bin bags and then chuck it in the street, on the pavement (that's "sidewalk" for you Amreekani's). No wonder there's so many rats in London. :shudder:

we recycle! we have the blue bin for cans and bottles adn stuff, and the red bin for newspaper and such.

i hate when people dont recycle, i actually get mad

i know in toronto theyre pretty strict with their garbage too, like it has to be divided, my aunts house has like 2-3 garbage cans in their kitchen
