You know, I would rather have recycling bins on every corner, or at least by the trash bin, rather than this stupid deposit thing. It's such a hassle to collect all your cans, and take them back to the grocery store for a 5 cent refund. Keep your stupid 5 cents, and make it easier for people to recycle.

Yeh, for some reason 'recycling' is the first thing that pops into people's minds when thinking about their individual responsibility to the environment. But what's everyone doing to reduce their carbon footprint? I take transit and ride my bike to work.

in conclusion, shut up, sally. on a related note, i proposed co-sponsoring a tree-planting campaign/event with our school's environmental group to my MSA and they gave me weird looks and changed the subject.

like a lot of times, you'll attend an islamic lecture followed by dinner and the speaker will constantly joke about how everybody just cant wait to get the speech over with and proceed to dinner..and that's a PERFECT timing to drop in a little reminder about how wastage of food is wrong or how gluttony makes you lazy and worthless

Actually, to answer the OP:
@ RIS 2006, one of the keynote speeches was about environment and our responsibility towards the Earth. It was either by Hamza Yusuf or Tariq Ramadan (I can't remember which), and the hall was PACKED. Like we had about 8,000 - 10,000 people sitting in the seats, and then maybe another few thousand standing in the aisles or sitting on the floor. Me and my friends couldn't get any seats so we just stood and listened and it was really so amazing that we literally forgot we were standing. Aside from that I know Muslim business owners who are very careful about recycling due to the fact that they are Muslim, and not due to regulatory pressures. And also, all the Muslim entities I know in the investment and finance world are very much aware of socially-responsible investing [SRI] standards of ethics which is supplemented by Islam's own standards on environment, ethics, treatment of workers, etc etc. So, to echo Aida's comment ... many Muslims do in fact care about the environment [as well as other ethical issues at large] and they are indeed acting on it - so just because you don't hear about it in your sphere of life doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

RIS 2006 was two years ago..
one event out of hundreds of lectures in mosques and musallahs and msas across north america isn't enough plus it was in english and not all 'american' muslims understand english |
