Dubai's Mile-Long Super Arch Bridge Set for March Construction - Photos - Fxfowle - Popular Mechanics

Here we were thinking that Minnesota's next-gen St. Anthony Falls Bridge was kicking up the next generation of mega engineering a notch from even the quake-proof Bay Bridge Skyway. But leave it to Dubai to build it way harder, faster and stronger—or, at least in the case of this newly approved design from New York's Fxfowle architects, way cooler.

As if the Burg Dubai tower wasn't already taking the worldwide skyscraper race to new heights, this as-yet-unnamed span will be the world's largest arch bridge, with 2000 vehicles set to cross its 12 lanes—per hour, in each direction—when it's slated for completion in 2012. At 670 ft. tall, Dubai's next super structure will stand higher than the George Washington Bridge (604 ft.) but fall short of San Francisco's existing Golden Gate Bridge (746 ft.).

Well, it looks like Dubai is.....well, words fail me.

also, they are building some ridiculous island chain in the shape of the seven continents, comprised of hundreds of islands....

dubai is probably the fanciest city in the world by a long way now

Same here. I actually researched apartments in the Burj Dubai. However, they're more expensive than what I am capable of affording, so that's out of the picture.

Burj Dubai and upcoming Al-Burj are very beautiful, and this bridge is just a stunning design.

Dubai is probably going to be the most advanced city in a decade. From what I hear, they're going to have monorails everywhere (futuristic style) to ease traffic congestion. It'll be literally the city of the future that everyone dreamed about back in the day.

Nothing about the bridge design, no less the buildings mentioned, are anything close to being stunning to me. It all looks just as gaudy and fugly as the rest of the place. Whatever though, Alhumdulilah I don't have to live there.

there are MANY things that are built in Dubai that have no purpose, but i think a bridge that will save time in transportation is essential.

To me Dubai looks like a never-ending exercise in excess, and waste. An indoor ski hill in a sweltering desert... entire islands being built in the shape of the continents for luxury condos... the capabilities required to pull that stuff of are remarkable, but it's sad to see where our priorities lay.

And those tentacle towers are just ugly.

Its a nice looking bridge no doubt, but its definitely not the tallest, and its not the longest either. If anyone here's ever been to Lake Ponchartrain, then you know what I mean.

That bridge is like 25 miles long ... way longer than this.

Dubai wasn't built by tourism alone, its as also built by oil money and other sources. They've diversified their economy so that they are not entirely reliant on oil money to sustain them. And thus, even now long before their oil has ran out, they have become a major tourist destination and business hub - many of the world's biggest corporations have their regional HQs there.

Nakheel and Emaar are two of the biggest development corps. in Dubai, and they do billions of dollars of development per year.

Zam, you're referring to The World project by Nakheel, and yeah its a bunch of several hundred islands they built up out of the ocean. Its a nice project. I intend on owning one of those islands one day inshallah for my own private vacation spot.

One of the execs at Nakheel is actually a close relative of one of the Islamicans.
She knows who she is.
