You know you're a convert when:

You get at least 10 marriage proposals at your Shahada.

Aunties suggest that you get married...just not to their sons.

Your parents are suddenly in serious contention for an Oscar nod, for their melodramatic portrayal of betrayed parents.

You leave the house in normal clothes but secretly put on hijab after you leave.

You spend every Eid with a family that isn't your own.

Everyone constantly asks you, "When are you going to change your name?"

Your parents start every sentence with, "When you were normal." or "Before you were brainwashed"

You feel like tattooing your conversion story to your head, so that you don't have to tell it over and over again.

Every time you tell your conversion story, you add a juicy, subhanAllah inducing detail.

I'm actually going to start wearing my kufi everywhere I go, and once I feel comfortable with that, I'm going to start dressing more traditionally (Salwar Kameez). Yes, the other Muslims at my college don't dress like that, but the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did so, therefore it's Sunnah and I want to try to follow Islam to the best of my ability.


However, I'm just worried that wearing a Salwar Kameez around college will get me crucified or something.


One of my friends converted awhile ago, and he said he would wear the throbe and everything around college, and people would call him Jesus. I guess we'll see...

Its up to you bro, but personally I don't see it strengthening my deen to dress in a style thats alien to my personality.

hate to break it to you bro, but the prophet (s) didn't wear shalwar kameez.. though some desi uncles swear that it's sunnah.

I think you'll find that on occasion, he (saw) did wear a pant and shirt combo that resembled shalwar kameez, although it wasn't his everyday attire.

However, when uncles talk about it being "sunnah", they mean it fulfills the requirements of sunnah clothing, whereas Western clothing in many instances doesn't.

Anyway, a lot of the things being mention are not exclusive for converts, for those of us who were born Muslim but not into specific cultures [i.e. Arab/Desi] experience many of the same things.

This weekend when I was sleeping over at the Masjid, I must have been asked about 20 times what my conversion story is.

I'm seriously thinking about just printing out copies and handing them out.

I agree. When I try to dress a little more traditional, even if I'm only wearing natural colored shirts and pants and kufi, I tend to feel a little stronger in iman. When I wear a little more traditional stuff, I find myself looking forward to salaat and praying on time and praying more focused, and I find myself looking to give dawah. I find myself eagerly reading Qu'ran, etc.

I guess it makes you feel like you're Muslim all the time, if that makes sense.
