Nice.
Do you go to Waterloo then, or Laurier?

Ibn: Yeah, for real. Last year was the first time I went to RIS and it was great. I loved it. Speakers were amazing and it really revived my Islamic spirit!

Salaam RIS goers,

what are good but not overpriced hotels near the convention? how far are they?
besides the convention fee/hotel, what other expenses are there for an out of towner?
hows the food/bazaar like?
do I need to bring snow boots?
is the convention center usually cold?
what else in Toronto is a must see?
how can I get the full Toronto experience? (within a few days). I want to go to that food place with the auto riksha outside.

Over 12,000 first-class rooms within walking distance, and more if you're driving, of course.

Check the PDF file available here: http://www.mtccc.com/admin/contentEn...rest_20062.pdf

Gas.

Parking.
Although its not much. On the weekends they have pretty low all-day rates. Just make sure you guys come early in the morning on each day of the convention, so you can park in their indoor + underground parking lot which connects directly to the Convention Centre, otherwise you'll have to park at one of the public parking lots located about a 5 min. walk away.

Shopping.
if you'll be doing any - either at the RIS bazaar or the city shopping malls.

Quote:
hows the food/bazaar like?
Quick stuff ... pre-made shwarmas, pizzas, etc. They have a food court and tons of tables, and microwaves available behind the counter so they do warm up the slices and stuff, but some people find it a bit pricey, as is the case with these conferences, so a lotta people just go out and eat, at either fast food restaurants or other.

A lot of us just go to the Richtree restaurant because they have everything there ... Italian, European, Mediterranean, Oriental, North American, seafood, fruits, all sorts of cheesecakes,... basically, EVERYTHING.

Quote:
do I need to bring snow boots?
We don't actually see much snow in the winter at all during December ... and besides you'll be indoors almost all day long so just wear shoes that are appropriate for winter - like, they keep your feet warm. The sidewalks outside are shoveled and all that anyways.

Quote:
is the convention center usually cold?
No, its pretty comfortable ... a lotta people [read: Canadians] toss their jackets in the car in the underground parking lots and just walk inside wearing lighter clothes.

Quote:
what else in Toronto is a must see?
Check the PDF file above. Loads of places.

Quote:

I dunno if they run those rickshaws in the winter, but for most of the other stuff ... you guessed it .... check the PDF file above.

Yeah, that is a lot. I'd totally go with you to all those places.
I go to U of T and I don't even have a school sweatshirt.

You gotta go up the CN tower too. And see Gerrard Street.
And drive up and down Yonge Street too.
All the touristy things.

nah that was all from looking at the places on the pdf Ibn posted. But I've heard about the coffee (that it's the best tasting coffee, I must taste it to believe it. Is it possible that Tim Hortons could be better than Dunkin Donuts coffee? I know Canada's magical but good coffee is hard to find) and riksha restaurant from people who went there.

I don't think Timmy's has the best-tasting coffee.

THE CANADIAN ISLAMIC CONGRESS
MEDIA COMMUNIQUE

October 25, 2007

PARLIAMENT DECLARES OCTOBER AS ISLAMIC HISTORY MONTH

Canada's federal parliament today officially declared October as Islamic
History Month in Canada.

Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier and Official Opposition Critic for
Canadian Heritage, Francophonie and Official Languages, Hon. Mauril
Bélanger, presented the following motion today in the House of Commons:

"That*,* in the opinion of the House, due to the important contributions of
Canadian Muslims to Canadian Society; the cultural diversity of the
Canadian Muslim community; the importance of Canadians learning about each
other to foster greater social cohesion; and the important effort now
underway in many Canadian communities in organizing public activities to
achieve better understanding of Islamic history, the month of October
should be designated Canadian Islamic History Month."

The Ottawa-Vanier MP was delighted that the House of Commons adopted this
motion which highlights the important contribution of the Muslim community
in Canadian society. « I encourage cultural exchanges between Canada’s
diverse communities, which make us a vibrant and dynamic society. I believe
that by having a better understanding of our fellow Canadians from various
communities and backgrounds that we will achieve a stronger and more
cohesive country », said MP Bélanger.

"October 2007 is the inaugural celebration of Islamic History Month Canada.
IHMC has been a long dreamed-of intercultural and educational project of
Canadian Muslims. We are thrilled at how positively Canadians are
responding to our IHMC activities and programs," said today's CIC
statement.

To date, several Canadian cities have proclaimed October as Islamic History
Month in their civic jurisdictions - including Victoria BC, Kingston ON,
Ottawa ON, Calgary AB and Burnaby and Port Coquitlam BC - with others
planning to follow their example.
