just from being around the area (not living in, but going to relatively often), i can tell you that it's definitely the DC feel; it's in the middle of it all. the imf and world bank are right nearby (amongst other things; it's a busy area) and foggy bottom is the metro stop. i would say it's safe, but you wouldnt want to be out alone at night. while the neighborhoods are safe, the fact that it's still very city and there are all sorts of crowds around means you can't really rely on things always being the same. i know that the dorms are pretty hard to get into unless you live in them, so that's a plus (keycard, monitors, etc.). there's a lot going on, so you'd be hard pressed to find yourself on the weekend with nothing to do (esp in warmer weather with all the festivals and museums to visit). it is e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e (the school, the area). if you're on any kind of budget, i do not recommend frequenting popular dc eating establishments (esp in georgetown), but it's nice to know that they're there for when you want to go. have fun.

I believe GW is very close to Georgetown - M Street etc. I haven't been in that area in over a year . I will shoot my friend an email and let you know. I know that she loved living in DC.

heavens no (on the car). not in the city. having a car in the gw/georgetown area (they are very close together, as dramarani mentioned) is more of a hassle than it is a help- parking is atrocious (expensive and scarce, not to mention mostly street parking on congested dc streets where you definitely have to keep your gps out of sight and the car all locked up). the only time you would want to have a car is if you want to get *out* of the city- it's hard to get around the suburbs on public transportation. but gw itself is fully maneuverable by metro and on foot, not to mention all sorts of shuttles (georgetown has really good shuttles because it doesn't have its own metro stop, but it only takes 10 min to walk from the nearest metro stops into georgetown anyway).

Cougar Spotted On Univ. Of Md. College Park Campus

Reporting
Kelly McPherson
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) ―

Jul 31, 2008 11:22 pm

An alert is out that you normally wouldn't expect on a college campus.

Kelly McPherson reports a cougar has been spotted on the University of Maryland College Park campus.

Police say it's been seen numerous times on the campus, and the school is taking the sightings very seriously.

"It's very scary," said a student.

There's a cougar roaming the College Park campus. It's odd because cougars do not live in this area.

"Looking for evidence or you know something that it killed or something that it left behind or footprints, or anything to make it move or run so we can see it, and we haven't been able to find anything," said Capt. John Brandt, University Police.

Police are most concerned about finding it. More than a dozen officers combed through the woods, three helicopters scanned from above and hundreds of cameras were put to use in scanning the area.

Security officers viewed video for the unwelcome guest. They're watching in case it comes back for food. They just need one image to decide what to do next.

"There's something out there, but we gotta see it to know what it is," said Brandt.

The description of the cat is light tan and tawny brown, about 4' long with a 4' tail, and weighing about 50 pounds. Several sightings have been reported from the area of Cole Field House, near the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, and continuing through the wooded areas to the area of the Comcast Center and Arena Drive Garage.

There has been no report of aggressive behavior on the part of the animal.

Community members are warned that cougars are a predatory species and that, if seen, the animal should not be approached.

University police say they aren't even sure it's a cougar and that it could be a bobcat or another large cat.

They say the possible risk to people and small animals means they must use all of their resources to figure it out.

If you see the animal, please contact the university police at 301-405-3555. University police are working with other agencies to remove the animal from the campus area.

Hello Neighbor,

I have a question for the locals. I am told to drive very carefully in VA because there are cops everywhere. Yet, when I drive in MD, if I'm not going 15 over in a school zone, I get run over. Also, we've been pulled over in MD - 3 times. 1 - light out over license plate, 2 - gunning a left turn after the light had totally turned red, 3 - speeding at least 20 miles over the speed limit on labor day weekend. And yet, no tickets. Alh.

So, is there really much of a difference between MD/VA driving?

Nah it's over-hype. The problem in VA isn't the abundance of cops... it's the ridiculous penalties and fines we have for if you do in fact get caught.

That said... I've been stopped 3 times for reckless driving in VA and alhamdulilah have never received a ticket. Besides... all you have to do is glare.
