Which dialect is that? Memoni and Punjabi are lexically/grammatically pretty similar.

I speak Gujerati and so I find it easy to understand memon, it's just the actual sentence construction that I struggle with.

I decided that I kind of fail at understanding Gujarati..I thought I did..then I hung out with some hardddddddcore Gujju speakers and got lost. The ones who speak a watered down version of it are easily understandable

And that would actually be, 'aaoun kaafi khatam mai vees ne uda se sikees'

And lol@typical Memon 'khatams'

that's what i thought in my days of ignorance. I'd be like, inji minji akni ni khapeti...

sally, i find gujerati and memon really similar, it's why i can listen to memon and understand what is being said...again, it's just actually speaking it myself that is difficult.

I phail. I've been known to stare into Gujju speakers faces with a huge WTF on my face Also I've protested to a few many times about how 'I don't get you' and been ignored.

But the ones who speak slowly are more understandable...

Default Re: Memon Pride

The funniest exchange occurred between this one crazy fast hardcore Gujju speaker neighbor of ours..an elderly woman who wears saris on a regular basis (and I mean, even during her evening strolls on the street...rather comical, bless her)

Anyway she was talking to me..I think I've mentioned before..she thinks just because my dad is well versed in Gujarati, so are my mom and myself...and she does NOT understand that I don't possess the level of comprehension anywhere near my dad, much less speak it.

So...during one of our one sided painfully lengthy conversations (one of many might I add) I decided I would change the one sidedness once and for all. I decided to respond to her in my (very broken) Memoni.

So it was like

Hardcore Gujju speaker + Broken Memoni speaker = (Without the smile)

It made for lots of funnyness and frustration... Esp when I complimented her saari...

"Ainjhe saari bau saari ai" (translation: your saari is very nice)

Thereafter she kept repeating the word saari. I think she was either saying she didn't understand what I just said, or she got saari and saari confused, or she was noticing the similarities in our languages?

Nobody knows..........to this day
