I'm not really sure what a Memon is. No one has ever identified as a Memon up here, at least amongst the people I know.

The kinds of Memons up here that I've met are:

1. Gujarati Memons (they call themselves Gujju, but their last name tends to be "Memon" and they speak Cutchi).

2. Memons from Pakistan (they migrated to Karachi in the past)
Haven't met too many Memons from East Africa, but lots of Ismailis.

The first group: the Gujju community doesn't accept them as real Gujaratis. Dunno if the Memon community accepts them as real Memons.

Memons to set up University in Dubai

Gulfnews: World Memon University to be established by 2013

Move to help student from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Newspaper: THE GULF TODAY, UAE, Circulation: 36,000 Dated 26th May 2008, Page 2

World Memon Organization, which represents the two million strong communities worldwide, will soon establish an internal university in Dubai to help students from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides the UAE to acquire internationally recognized degrees while staying closer to home.

The proposed university would be called World Memon University.

The announcement was made at the 7th Annual General Meeting of the World Memon Organization (WMO), a humanitarian group that focuses on the betterment of the poor and the underprivileged around the world. The three-day event, started in Dubai on Sunday, facilitates and institutions that comprise the organization meet to review their previous projects and discuss future undertaking.

With the capacity to accommodate more than 5,000 students whose pursuit for quality education are hindered by poverty, the university will offer full academic programmes in the areas of Accountancy, Agriculture, Engineering, Biological Science, Computer Science, Costume and Fashion Technology, Home Science, Management, Mass Media and Healthcare.

As an organization comprised of institutions operating within diverse industries, the WMO announced that its members have also pledged their academic inputs as industry experts to impart knowledge to the future students. Initial work on the university is set to commence in 2010 with state-of-the-art facilities.

"As one of the most rapidly growing economies in the region and home to a strong Memon community, hope this progressive emirate will welcome our most ambitious project to date, the World Memon University," said Haji Abdul Razzak Yaqoob, WMO president and chairman of ARY Group.

Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan said that the UAE has placed great emphasis on the full development of human potential and has invested a good ideal of resources in the education system

"I congratulate the WMO on the World Memon University and look forward to welcome the university into the education environment in the United Arab Emirates," he said.

Mohammed Tofique Amdani, chairman of the organizing committee, said that half of the seats will be reserved for the students from the community who will get scholarship well, while the remaining half will be open for students from outside the community.

He pointed out that the community has set aside a budget of Dhs100 million to start the project. The building construction is expected to start by 2010 and classes will commence by 2013. "We aim to start with a course in business management," he said.

"We felt that students from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka cannot afford to go to the US and European countries for higher education. Thus we decided to wet up a world class university in the UAE which would allow students acquire an internationally recognized degree while home, said Abu Baker Shaikhani a WMO Trustee.

The organization has also allocated $5 million for the expansion of its charity, healthcare and education networks across the seven chapters of the WMO worldwide.

I'm pretty sure I know more Memons than you (or for that matter, anyone else on this forum), and I'd say 95% of the Memons I've met are generous people who're willing to spend money on what's important or what they like. There's one guy (in a particular social group of about 75) I can think of who could be called "cheap," and everyone makes fun of him for it.

Most of the Punjabis I've met are dumb.
