Democracy
Simple questions: Do people deserve democracy? Can they really handle it?
I don't think so. I'm not about to rush out and try to overthrow my own country here, but we've done nothing to prove we deserve a right to vote. All democracy means is that the majority can get what they want. That's a drawback if the majority is crazy and/or stupid.

My point exactly. That's just what democracy does.

I did not start this thread to make people foam at the mouth about whether or not it's shirk. I did it to ask if it works.

Re: Democracy
I don't get how its shirk, but its a bit of a facade- Do people really get what they want? Are they clever enough to know what's good for them?

No they're not. Like I said, democracy gives control to stupid people if stupid people happen to be a majority.

Re: Democracy
One thing you should know is that in systems that take power away from the broad populace and put it in the hands of some smaller subset of people, its much more likely that you will be one of the people who has no say, rather than one of the people who will have a very empowered voice in comparison to a republican system. The same goes for the rest of us. So I'd rather share power with millions of other dumb people like myself than have no power and let some self appointed or hereditary clique control my society

Well, like Winston Churchill said - "the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter"
But then he also pointed out that "it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government, except all those others that have been tried from time to time."
Not that he gets the last word on the matter...

See, I don't think that's what the goal is of most successful democracies. It's to put a limit on power and keep the government accountable to those it's governing.
