Thanks everybody. You were all big helps
![]() I feel a little bit bad because eventually I was a little bit rude. They got too loud for me to hear my show even though I kept turning it up and up. Finally, I turned it off and said "you guys can watch whatever you want. Im going to go somewhere." and the I felt bad instantly because they all looked a little embarassed. So I quickly said, more sweetly, that I only want to leave so they can have their boy time and so I wont interfere. I asked later for my husband to bring my sunglasses out to my car for me and I could tell he was mad. He said he thought I was very rude to our guests and I instantly regretted that. He eventually said he wasnt mad anymore when I explained that I wasnt TRYING to deliberately make them feel bad. next time, im just not going to even be there. I will go do my own thing. |

Wait, were you invited to hang out with them? Or was it understood that they needed 'guy time alone'?

To you it's rude and inconsiderate. To them, it's not. In their culture men don't talk to women (unless it's something really important or business) not even to say salam. It took me a while to realize this and not feel hurt by it. They weren't trying to be rude to you or anything. As for the speaking in Arabic thing, they are just used to it. It's hard for their brains to remember to switch from speaking their mother tongue to speaking a second language. They speak English all the time, it's nice for them to speak their most comfortable langauge for a change.
I used to lived around a lot of Saudi's (oh how I miss those days) and their men were always very kind, polite, considerate, but they didn't speak to me much. We were the less fortuante in the community at that time, and they were so kind and would bring things to our house, if my car broke down they would take me to school, when my husband was out of town and I became ill they took me to the doctors, but they never said anything. Sometimes salam, but always curtesy with a minimum of language. I would ways say "thank you" etc because that's my habit. Give yourself time, you'll adjust

Yikes, kona. Have a breather and relax. I did not ask my husband to get my glasses out of spite. I asked him to get my glasses because I was already in the car and didnt want to get back out to go in the house and get them. He was right there. no I wasnt invited to do anything. I was told the night before by my roommate "my friends are coming over for lunch tomorrow" and that was it. Last edited by IrishMuslimah; 02-08-2010 at 09:32 AM. the three of us hung out one day, but it was SO awkward trying to talk to his friend. he was a nice guy, but he wouldn't really respond that much when i tried to strike up conversation with him ("so what are you studying, what's it like in your country, what do you think of the US" blah blah). at first i thought he was kind of cold, but then i realized that he hasn't really had that many chances to associate with women in a casual setting like that. i think it might have also been extra weird because i wear hijab, so he wasn't sure how to act around me.

Its rude but to be honest its not like they are doing it on purpose. If you were in SA and had American friends you would automatically speak English to them. Its just a mental thing when you are around people of your ethnicity/culture you instantly turn into one.
I talk very different to Americans than i do my family in the UK or my UK friends. When i'm with my UK friends my wife can;t understand a word I'm saying.

Have you ever heard a fob speaking English? Their English might be really good but they have this heavy accent which makes them sound like freshies trying really hard to speak English. That's what Americans sound like to us when they try to speak English.
