I guess my mom's side of the family has a lot of foresight about immigration. Out of the dozens and dozens of cousins, only 3 nieces are in the west, and only because of their husbands. One was here, but she and her kids forced the husband to go back. For them, their lifestyle was far more comfortable in Pakistan and they had a lot of respect over there (both were doctors and lecturers.) Here, they were just burger flippers and security guards. Many aunts and uncles have come to visit, and their visits have confirmed to them how much they would hate to live here. One khala and khalu initially came for 6 months, but left after one. Within a week, she was crying about how lonely it was in Canada (despite the plethora of desis in their area). She described the west as a gilded cage--pretty on the outside, but empty and cold on the inside. She missed the hustle and bustle of her own watan: the adhaan five times a day, the neighbors simply dropping by for a chat (no need to hold big fat dinner parties, a cup of tea was enough), the vegetable sellers, the fact her siblings were right in the same neighborhood, there was always a wedding, a birth, even a funeral, the bazaar at walking distance, all the simple things in life. Here, she felt everyone was like a hamster in a wheel, and that unless you made a huge effort, people don't meet each other as much.

Got5, I think it was you who posted that article once about the uncle who had it all, the fancy house, multiple cars, a flourishing business, but he was still miserable because his kids were off track. If my mom's family knew about that article, they would frame the thing in their living room--it's their thoughts and fears down to a T. They know that there will be some huge price to pay for coming here--whether it's your son screwing around with goriyan, or your daughter not getting a rishta or having a boyfriend, or even failed business, lost jobs, what have you. For them, if you are comfortable, stay put. If you think you're going to be a bigshot in the west, prove it by doing it first in the old country. Odd, I know, but I appreciate them for it.

i really doubt your average indian could afford to buy the car, even if he could, he still wouldnt buy it given how cheap most desis are. that car is being targeted at all the workers in those outsourced jobs down in hyderabad and bangalore. however, you might start seeing them on the roads of delhi and bombay first.

yes i did, it was translated from the nationwide newspaper called "urdu times", i think its printed in new york, but theres also a chicago and houston edition. It was titled 'what is gained and what is lost in america'. I just read some figures showing that nearly half of all pakistanis living new york city, america's most expensive city to live in, live in poverty. but they dont care, you know why, because they get to act like big shots whenever they travel home and they know it. they dont expect to be anything in the country they work in. i asked a pakistani once 'is it worth all this, working grueling 12 hour a day shifts, standing, as a cashier?" he said he does it for his children, because of the education system here. and you are right you should stay put, especially for people in India. This isnt the 1970's, where massive poverty wracked everyone. There are alot of opportunities for them in India now. Now you can even buy a brand new car for only $2,500! LOL. but still they scream 'amreeka amreeka', and i see it all the time, we have plenty of illegalls living right here in the desi ghettos. however having said that, the irony is, thanks to them, at least in my city, you can buy virtually any type of product from india or pakistan. have purchased packs of 'goldleaf', i have had cans of 'pakcola', i even bought a liter bottle about two weeks ago. why is this possible? because whenever all these people go off to visit thier countries, they buy up all these products and sell them to the desi stores over here - to pay for thier trips ironically. I have a freind, his dad made a kool three grand just doing that. that not only covered his costs, but thensome.
