the rest of northern india, stretching from rajastan to bengal speak hindi, meaning its not thier native language, but the language they learn in school or off the street from other people. its mixed with local and sankrit words. the people who work in bollywood, such as the writers are usually poets or screen play writers who hail from the state of U.P. the heartland of the mughal empire. that's why they use urdu, especially since its viewed as an artistic poetic language the way french is viewed. i knew a gujju hindu guy who loved some stupid bollywood song, but he didnt know what janaat meant, or other religious terms borrowed from islam. even a rajastani hindu i have met, said how he was listening to a local paki radio show and said he found the urdu kinda hard to understand. bollywood is not representative of anything. ask your freinds to compare indian tv news for example with pakistan tv news and they will see a drastic difference in language. for example banglaDESH. desh is sanskrit for country, and this word comes out of sankrit, but in Urdu, the word is Mulk. in Hindi they do not use the word Mulk to describe country, they use the word desh.
even the word for india, in urdu its called 'Hindustan' which comes from the arabic word Hind, for India. In Hindi they use the sanskrit word 'Bharat'. Of course i have heard this word being used on pakistani news channels and written in urdu newspapers when describing India.
