i always knew what i'm going to name my kids inshaAllah,
but i'm beginning to like Taha a lot . it's so.... .
and i agree with girl names being harder to think of

ps: the changing names thing when a child is sick is no superstition. it's happened to a couple of people.

Abu Hazim replied, “Because you have built and established this world and you have destroyed your Aakhirah, so you hate to go from what you have established to what you have destroyed.”

Someone mentioned Ilhaam which means inspiration, but I would have a problem naming my child that, it sounds too close to Haml.

iSHi: Mzuri is the correct way of saying beautiful in Swahili. Though I guess Zuri works for the name.

I have been thinking of this post and I actually like the sound of Nzuri. Come to find out its some conversational line. Ugh.

nectar: Basheerah: Bearer of good news (name of sahabiyah)

Anytime I hear that name I think of Bagheera.

Default Re: Baby Names

Found this on MSNBC on some story about which baby names have been popular [in the USA] over the past century.

Celebrity baby names

Forget Suri or Shiloh – celebrities have given their children far stranger names! Discover the stars' oddest baby names:

Apple (Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow)

Moxie CrimeFighter
(Magician Penn Jillette)

Hopper
(Sean Penn and Robin Wright)

Pilot Inspektor
(Jason Lee and Beth Riesgraf)

Sosie
(Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick)

Destry
(Director Steven Spielberg and actress Kate Capshaw)

Aurelius Cy
(Supermodel Elle Macpherson)

Kal-El Coppola
(Nicholas Cage)

Bluebell Madonna
(Spice Girl Geri Halliwell)

Audio Science
(Actress Shannyn Sossamon)

Sage Moonblood
(Sylvester Stallone)

Tallulah
(Bruce Willis and Demi Moore)

Kyd
(David Duchovny and Tea Leoni)

I'm not sure if I can feel sorry for some of these kids ... since daddy has enough money to buy them a pampered life they probably won't have to hear too much heckling and derision about their names.

this post is old but the basic idea is that the kid was getting evil eye and this caused him to become sick, so by naming him something insane like donkey you deflect the evil eye away from the kid. Who's gonna be jealous of a kid named donkey or stupid?

however, usually the kid is just named beggar (or whatever) when they're born in order to pre-emptively protect them from the evil eye. This practice is (thankfully) pretty rare, so we dont see too many people with dumb names like that running around. It only happens among the most uneducated people from the lowest class in Egyptian society

I think we're going to go with Isma for a girl, and maybe Saif for a boy. The only thing is, my husband has a first cousin named Saif; would it be weird to keep the same name?
