My cousin's name was changed from Javeria to Hoor al-Ain after she had some major health problems as a baby. And when I was born, my dad named me Khair-an-nisa after his mom, but eventually my parents changed it to something (slightly) easier for the goras.

is that thing legit? where some kids are sick because of their names or something - and when the parents change the kid's name, the kid's health improves?

I've seen it happen right in front of my eyes to one of my own cousins' sons ... right here in Canada. He was always sick and with fever and everything they or the docs tried wouldn't work, so some elder Muslim relative said to change his name and *snap* ... he was better, now always laughing and tumbling around.

sounds like its just superstition. ignorant villagers in egypt tend to do stuff like that, naming their kids "stupid", "donkey", "beggar", etc or changing their names from something nice to something retarded like that after they get sick

Default Re: Baby Names

Didn't Prophet sallahu wa walleh wasalaam changed names of the few muslim babies when their names had some connotations to Jahhiliya times? and also changed names of his cousin, who later than became his wife? from Barrah bint Jahsh to Zainab bint Jahsh (radiallahu anha)?

we can't assume..this was supersititution? (sp?) and the latter name change was not due to the sickness, if i recall correctly, it had to with a minor personality defect..

hmm.. they tried that with my cousins but i don't think it really worked. with and without the name changes, they still have poor health.

so they change the name to something worse after someone gets sick? i've heard the opposite, where they change the name to something better, after which their health improves.

Its actually not superstition, thanks.

Names have an actual effect on people.

Default Re: Baby Names

this name-changing-life-changing concept makes no sense whatsoever.

if a baby's health changed after his/her name was changing, it's coincidental. there's no logic to back up the causality.

You know, the evil gaze never made any logical sense to me either.

Doing masaa' on top of your feet never made any logical sense either.

Believing in a Being that we cannot measurably detect with any of our five senses doesn't make logical sense either.
