Default Polish Children Vs Muslim Children

Polish Children Vs Muslim Children

John Reid, the ex-Home Secretary has predicted that more Catholic schools are needed due to influx of East European migrants. An estimated 20,000 Polish children need schools for their faith. He highlighted the growing pressure on faith school places because of the growing number of Polish Catholic children in the United Kingdom. There is a demand for Catholic school places because 95% of Polish are Catholics. Polish ambassador to the United Kingdom said that there are now so many Polish children in British schools that they should be taught Polish language, history and culture, so that they do not find themselves cut off from their cultural roots and enjoy the beauty of their literature and poetry. Many schools are recruiting Polish teachers as role models. Churches have started Sermons in Polish language so that the Polish people can feel at home.

Muslim communities have started to arrive during the 50s, mainly from the sub-continent. They brought their cultures, languages and faith. They contributed for the British economy by paying all sorts of taxes. They built Masajid for offering prayers and community centers for the education of their young generations. Not a single politician ever thought and campaigned for state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models. Instead, Muslim children are being discouraged to learn and speak their mother tongues even at home by the politicians. Even Imams are being forbidden to use Urdu in their sermons, inspite of the fact that majority of British Muslims are from Pakistan. Bilingualism should be encouraged because it is enormously beneficial to children development. It should be introduced as early as nursery level. I believe the result would be amazing. It is absurd to send bilingual children to schools with monolingual teachers.

Muslim schools in Britain emerged as an answer to a major challenge that Muslim communities faced in the West on how to educate their children and inculcate Islamic values and morals among them. Muslim children have been suffering academically, linguistically, socially, emotionally and spiritually for the last 50 years. They have been in a wrong place at a wrong time. The state schools have become exam factories. They have no time and energy to educate children. Institutional racism, incivility, drug, crime, binge drinking, anti-social behaviour, high rate of abortion and an increase in teenage pregnancies are common part of life in state schools. Muslim parents do not want their children to be integrated into such barbarity. Muslim children need to learn to be proud of their Islamic, cultural and linguistic Identities without fear of discrimination and bullying. There are over 500,000 school age Muslim children and only 4% of them attend Muslim schools. There is a need for more Muslim schools but they are being asked by the politicians to open their doors for the children of other faiths or no faiths. The demand for Muslim schools is immense and every school has a lengthy waiting lists. Muslim communities do not have enough resources to set up schools for each and every Muslim child. There are hundreds of state schools where Muslim children are in majority, in my opinion all such schools may be designated as Muslim community schools.

Big up the Poles.. LOL.

Yes, the double standards in British Education Policy really disgust me.. on the one hand, they want Muslims to INTEGRATE and like u say, there is a big discouragement for these kids to learn English, blah blah blah... (along with their parents of course) and now they wanna put in Polish role models so these kids can feel at home? I'm all for that, as I do blv that's the best way to deal with new kids, and even Black kids who are underachieving in a classroom being taught by a middle class white teacher who doesn't know how to control or engage with the rowdy Black kids, but even the govt is realising this and even advocate Black supplementary schools after the great work they have been doing within their own communities on a voluntary basis. But the support for Muslim schools has JUST NOT been seen in the same way, eventho South Asian Muslim kids are performing just as bad (if not worse in some cases) as African/Caribbean kids.

Just a quick off-the-topic question - What are other Londoners/UKers experiences of the new Poles in the UK? Unortunately apart from one girl I met randomly, the experience for me has been pretty sad and not nice at all..

Oh, back to the topic - I start a work placement at a Catholic school next Wednesday. It's a really rough school so it's not one of those posh Catholic schools. There is a large immigrant population, especially those from a Polish background and as I'll be working in the Social Inclusion Unit, I'll be dealing with a lot of them. It'll be interesting to see how they interact outside of their groups because the deputy head of this boys school was warning me that the hardest group to keep engaged is the Polish boys coz they pretty much refuse to mix with anyone else but their own people.

Anyway, thanx for the article, it was really interesting and totally the kinda stuff I'm into!!

Just a few of points, it not just a case of others wanting Muslims to integrate, they should also wish to integrate.

The Uk like Poland is a Christian country, likewise the cultures are very similar .

You seem to have a down on those you describe as middle class; why?

Poles have lived and integrated successfully into the UK over many years, I am sure the new comers will do the same .

Hi Roberto

What du mean by I seem to have a down on what I described as middle class?? I'll wait for you to clarify before I respond, thanks!

And I get the feelin, the new flux of Polish newcomers have a different mentality than those of previous generations.. maybe they are over-confident this time because there are so many of them at the same time?? I dunno, but there is definately a different attitude..

From your reaction I guess that my feelings were wrong, to explain, when I read this: "being taught by a middle class white teacher who doesn't know how to control or engage with the rowdy Black kids," and this "posh Catholic schools" I thought there was a case of inverted snobbery, as I have said I guess I was wrong and hence, if so, I withdraw my remark.

That there is a generation gap between those who arrived during and shortly after WW2 and now, is undisputable, but the commonalities I have mention will, I am sure, result in a more successful integration than that which is being achieved by the Muslims communities.

Hi..

Yes, you were wrong but thats ok coz I dint exactly go into detail in my initial post.. if anything, I commend the white teachers with middle-class salaries who have the best of intentions when going into these schools and putting up with so much disrespect and rudeness throughout their day.

Alot of them could easily go into a slightly-lower paid job that comes along with A LOT less hassle or even go into office-based education consultancy or policy-making with their classroom and teaching experience but instead alot of them stay on, hoping to make a change.

Unfortunately, as is with the "Black" problem of underachievement, there are similar levels of underachievement mongst the Muslim South Asian communities. Both of these groups have similar problems - a lack of role models, a lack of cultural understanding as well as other factors such as these communities usually comin from economically deprived backgrounds.

As for, the new Polish generation being far more successfully integrated - I hope so, but only time will tell!!

British Muslim children have been mis-educated and de-educated by the British schooling for the last 50 years. Now less than 4% attend Muslim schools while more than 95% are at the mercey of monolingual non-Muslim teachers who have no idea of the needs and demands of bilingual Muslim children.

Thyere are hundreds of state schools where Muslim children are in majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be designated as Muslim community schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models. There is no place for a non-Muslim monolingual teacher or a child in a Muslim school.

Sir Cyril Taylor, chairman of the Specialist Trust. is against the state funded Muslim schools. He has advised the British establishment to set up multi-faith schools. A couple of months ago, he urged Muslim parents not to use their mother tongues with their children at home. He has no idea of the educational processes. He has no right to speak for the Muslim community.

do we breathe different air? A lot of muslim kids didn't come to my school because of their own choice! We do not have different needs, we have different wants and they're nothing that non muslim teachers can't learn to respect.

You can't create your own society within somebody elses. If the english culture and anyone who is not a muslim is so much of a threat to you then you're in or talking about the wrong country, mate

One man does not represent the whole of society. You may have felt threatened by what he said, personally i think it's a little unintelligent of him, but his views do not coincide with everybody elses. Multi faith schools seem like a better idea though and offer the opportunity for young children to get used to the actions of other young children who wish to express their religious beliefs. This way religion may be more open and less like a taboo subject which is to blame for everyones problems.

Your views are too black and white and throughout what you say, you don't mention what kind of future your desired present state would involve. A country where muslims are even less understood than before, hiding behind the comforting curtain which divides them from the outside world. Maybe even one where there is more hate. Is that the kind of future you desire?
