He was drunk and threw a HARD onion at the back of her head. I'm sorry, I have four brothers, I know what it feels like having something even playfully thrown at me by one of them. I fall on my ass in pain.  To think how it would feel if they threw it out of anger with the intention to bring pain to me? Especially in the back of my head? Damn.
So hell yeah that drunken fool should be charged with assault.

It hurts when hard things get thrown at you. Onions are as hard as baseballs (and heavier) so she could have a nice knot in the back of her head where the onion hit.
One thing I've noticed, people in the midwest drink wayyyy too much.
