wallahi that was a scary experience. Only Allah saved us from being hurt. I was sleeping and didn't wake up til the car started flipping so I didn't know what happened, or where I was. A truck driver pulled over and extinguished the fire, then he cut my belt off (I was stuck) so I could get out. The car was totaled. I wouldn't wish this experience even on my enemy.

If theres anything to learn from this experience, is that death can come at any, and even the most unexpected times. You hear about these janazas for a brother whos 27 and died in his sleep, or a teenager dying, but forget about it in a few days. This is just another reminder.
wow thats scary...alhamdulillah you guys were all ok. how did you guys get the rest of the way home?

Also If MM wears a jack with M on the back of it, then I "think" MM was sitting in a row ahead of me in "how to answer difficult questions" session. Not sure though.

I see.

Haven't heard of that term in Canada before though, with what all the ISNA / ICNA / RIS / MuslimFest stuff that goes on year 'round ... its never too long before the next event comes up.

As salaamu alaikum family,

My name is Five Eighty (580) and I was one of the performers on the open mic session that MYNA had put together for both saturday and sunday night...so here is my official observation of both nights...On Saturday night...the open mic session got started a little late the original time was midnight in the grand ballroom in the hyatt aka "Club ISNA" the entertainment session didnt actually start until 12:45 but alhumdulilah...there was approx 1,000 in attendance was which the entire middle section of the room plus kids sitting on the floor near the stage. The sister in charge did not know exactly what she was doing so instead of putting on the large acts like Amir Sulaiman or Sound of Reason ETC ..she decided to put the novice acts first...which is cool but mind you its about 1am and there is no cd player or sound hook up...except for the house speaker system....there's a long improv show by the sister's brother whih took approximately 20mins...and after his performance the majority of the audience was starting to leave and still myself, J-Seriyus (formerly of MPAC), Ms. Laitifah, Naeem from (Native Deen) Amir Sulaiman, and Liza Garza haven't performed...so brother amir took over and began put the larger acts in front of me and a couple of others was which cool because it was to keep the audience there ...at this point was under 200 people....at last at 2:30am myself and j-seriyus join the stage and did a little verse acapella..and quickly exited the stage because we was tired as well...at 2:30am the audience was down to approximate 40-50 people...A muslim punk band group called "The Kominas"took on the stage at approx 3am...and from what I heard later that night...was that they were playing too loud...they also had 2 lesbian muslim women on stage with them...the women wasn't doing anything lewd to my knowledge but the group was asking to exit the stage after refusing to stop playing loud,,,,and the group began to shout "Pigs are HARAM" to the police and was escorted off the stage...the people that was in attendance got up and left the ballroom and some run out..,...and thats was it for Saturday night...by Sunday..the word had gotten back to ISNA Youth director Iyad Alnachef..and by Sunday Night...Iyad tried to make sure that last night incident wouldnt happend sunday...so he required all acts to audition in front of him...and he was to judge whether they could perform or not...Sunday performances was to start at Midnight but was put on hold until the main ISNA entertainment session had ended...luckily a group called "Turntable Dhrik" had bought 4 turntables, a monitor, and myself and j-seriyus borrowed at smooth wooden sheet for them to breakdance on...Iyad told the breakdancers...that they couldnt breakdance because it was haram for men/women to dance...the group had a emergency meeting to decide whether they will still perform...and they did...at 1am we were told by Iyad that the mics would be cut off at 1:30 am because Iyad tld us they ISNA did not want the kids to miss FAJR ... so we had only 30 mins...at that time I decided not to perform...and to add insult to injury 2 sheiks spoke to the crowd for approximately 10 each...which now its almost 1:20am...which give everyone only 10 MINUTES TO PERFORM...so J-Seriyus went on first...and did 2 songs...meanwhile myself and Tyson of Remarkable Current began to dance in defiance of the ISNA director and then turntable dhirk...did their set...which was extended to 1:50 until Iyad finally cut them off...he was maddddd !!! because during their set ...they had a dj competition that use islamic messages from hip hop songs...like "all Praise Due" by Mos Def and others...and because they were scratching "Allah" and other islamic quotes within their set...he wanted them off...so as everything was quiet...I said loudly" THEY DON'T LIKE HIP HOP",,,and kids from the audience began to approach Iyad and express their feelings...about the entertainment session being cut short...and about how hip hop doesn't get any respect at ISNA...and how they wanted muslim hip hop and their voice to be heard...Young G (jihad) manager suggested that we stop talking to IYAD and start our own entertainment session in the lobby of the hyatt...so thats what we did..so me (580), tyson, naeem of native deen, the sound of reason, project 26, Ms. Laitfah, J-Seriyous,Young G (Jihad)..with acoustic guitars provided by project 26 and sound of reason...had our session in the lobby in front of approx 200 siting teens...and Ms. latifah emceed the event and we had a positive jam session...with Iyad in attendance...and this was videotaped and hopefully make to the internet...soon...insha'Allah...because it was inspiration and beautiful....well thats my take on ISNA 44TH ANNUAL CONVENTION entertainment session...

Salaams,

Five Eighty

wow. haha

i was at the entertainment session saturday night, i stayed until that first punk band went up there. When that dude Riz (or whatever his name was) went up there to do his spoken word piece, there wasnt a whole load of ppl in the audience left, because it was so late. I have to admit, he was really funny, had a few inappropriate terms in his piece. Apparently he was never supposed to go up there, and just sort of went up on stage on his own. After which i saw hotel staff come in and take him to the back room. and they were arguing about something. The worst part was the independent film crew ppl started getting all of this chaos on tape! who knows where thats gonna end up. I later heard that the cops were called. anyhows, i got the dudes whole spoken word piece on video and will upload it when i get a chance inshA

on another note, i also got this awesome pic of the sound or reason guys taking pictures of Naeem (from native deen) performing on their camera phones. it was so cute. i cant wait till they do a collaboration!

even tho there was so much chaos around the late night entertainment session saturday night, i thought it was a good idea and kept a lot of ppl out of the lobby who would have otherwise not been preoccupied and wandered. maybe better planning next year with the same concept might do the trick.
