MPAC Presents 'Evening with Zarqa Nawaz' in Houston on Mar. 1st
February 28, 2008

The Muslim Public Affairs Council is proud to present "Little Mosque on the Prairie" creator and director Zarqa Nawaz and stand-up comedian Preacher Moss at a special event in Houston, Texas on Saturday, March 1. MPAC senior staff will also conduct interactive workshops on Media & Civic Engagement at the University of Houston on Saturday.

AN EVENING WITH ZARQA NAWAZ
featuring Preacher Moss
7:30 p.m.
Hilton Hotel at the University of Houston
4800 Calhoun Street, Houston, TX 77204
$50 minimum donation per ticket

Since its debut last year, the groundbreaking hit Canadian sitcom "Little Mosque on the Prairie" has generated international media coverage of its complex and endearing portrayal of the Muslim residents of a small town called "Mercy". At its heart, "Little Mosque" takes a humorous look at relationships, family, love, the generation gap, and balancing different faiths and cultures in a prairie setting.

"As a community, we're realizing that rather than sit back and complain about our representation, we have to be proactive in creating our own image," says Nawaz, who will be exploring "Comedy as a Tool in Public Outreach" during her keynote speech. "Become filmmakers, become journalists, own our own newspapers, participate in society."

Tickets for the "Evening with Zarqa Nawaz" Dinner at the Hilton Hotel at University of Houston are available for $50 each. Call MPAC at (213) 383-3443 to purchase your tickets today.

Media & Civic Engagement Workshops

also on Saturday, MPAC senior staff will be conducting two interactive workshops on Media Engagement and Civic Engagement for local community members.

Executive Director Salam Al-Marayati, Community Development Director Haris Tarin and Communications Director Edina Lekovic will share their expertise during the workshops, which will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel at the University of Houston.

For more information about either event, contact MPAC at (202) 547-7701 or (213) 383-3443 or email info@mpac.org.
