Default The Official Zakat Thread

For all things Zakat. This thread is for when you need help calculating Zakat and have any questions etc...

Plus it is for those who want to give general or specific advice and those who want to explain the calculations of Zakat pertaining to various wealth.

Dunno if Zakat calculators are good enough but here's one:

IslamiCity.com - Zakat

And one more:

Hidaya Foundation - Zakat Calculator

If you give your zakat to a charity such as Islamic Relief, be sure to have your employer match the gift (if they do that). That way the charity will get more money.

these organizations that you can give your zakat too -- does 100% of your donation go to the needy, or is a certain percentage taken for "overhead" costs and such?

Well they need to spend some money on overhead. It costs money to run the programs, so 100% of the money can't go to the programs themselves. If you want to check out charitable organizations, charity navigator is pretty good.

You can pay your zakat all year around, even in portions- if thats easier for you, but its best to pay it in Ramadhan because there's more reward for any good deed in Ramzan than in any other month. Though, some of the earlier Muslims paid a portion everyday, instead of the entire amount at one time. (I guess that had to do with the fear of dying before the year was over, without having paid it)
