I love going through my mom's old stash of fabric. I found some fabric with tribal and floral patterns that will go perfectly with the spring pattern trends. I'm going to try sewing some dresses/tunics with them.

So I made my first tunic with this yellow and black cotton floral fabric. I also made a pair of basic black cotton trousers. They both came out decent after a few alterations I had to make. Sewing is a lot harder than it looks, but you learn from fixing your mistakes.

was sewing trousers difficult, Waves? I haven't attempted pants yet, it looks tricky. What kind of patterns did you use for the tunic/pants?

for the past few months I've been thinking of sewing baby dresses. No it's not a subconscious desire to have kids, but I have all these fabrics that would look great as kids clothes and sewing baby clothes would be a lot easier and quicker than making adult clothes. I have this pink/yellow seersucker fabric I want to make into a little dress. Also baby dresses can be really girly/old fashioned silhouettes and I like those kind of styles as opposed to having to make adult clothes contempory looking. When I get time I'm going to check out kids patterns and give it a try.

MoonStar I don't use any patterns. I usually just use one of my old tunic or trousers that fit me well as a measurement. Then I make any design changes I want from there. It's kind of like what the tailor does. The trousers weren't that difficult since it was just a pair of basic drawstring, wide leg ones without pockets. I'm sure it's more difficult to sew with all the pockets and a more tailored waist.

ABCDGIRL I'm learning how to sew from my mom who is self-taught. I hope to take classes though because I want to learn how to cut the fabric professionally and design it on my own. Then there's stuff like embroidery and crocheting that I also want to learn.

Just watched Project Catwalk and feel like a loser for missing like 3 months of my fashion course(city&guilds) (3hrs a week). I'm probably sooo behind. It's not that bad cuz I can extend the 2year course to like 5 years if need be, but still . They've prob done loads and are making they're patterns already, and I still havent finished my seam & fastening samples and quater-scale patterns. Boo. I shouldn't have missed the begginning lessons should I. *feels stupid*.Evening classes that are a 25min bus ride away annoy me though. Especially when the only bus service going there is expensive and very unreliable.

But that show just makes me wanna design design design and make stuff. And attend my lessons. And maybe when I'm finished with uni, do another daytime/fulltime fashion course in college(Btec) . I'm crazy, I hate school &studies but I still keep going back more than normal people .

so i bought this skirt that i could wear to girly parties without trying it on (cuz it was like $3). and it's like a good inch above my knee.

it's A-line with pleats, so if i wear pants underneath it, i look like a ballerina or somethin (it's pink).

i've tried wearing it as a tube top but i look preggo unless i put a belt over it, and wear something over.

what to do. any ideas?

You could add an one inch border to the hem of the skirt in a coordinating fabric like this skirt:

Abaya - a set on Flickr

"Fashion students at Virginia Commonwealth University were given an assignment to design an abaya. Fashion students at Virginia Commonwealth University's Qatar campus designed bathing suits - some of which sported hoods."

thought this was an interesting assignment, and also it reminded of the little black dress- which is also just a shorter basic black dress, but little details make all the difference to give it an elegant look. Abayas (nice ones at least) have a similar look in a way, basic yet classy.
