Well, like I posted recently (in the Facebook thread)... the men in my family don't wear them, so I've been raised thinking that shorts (on anybody grown up) are odd.
They're just for kids.
My baby bro and mom went shopping the other day and he came back with a pair of shorts, which he tried on for me. They didn't cover his knees though so I was like "Ooh, not good.  I don't like them."
He was all "Why? 'Cause they don't cover my knees?"
Dunno how he knew that. My mom didn't teach it to him (clearly, 'cause she bought those for him) and my dad wouldn't either, 'cause they don't know/care about awrah. I'm guessing he learned it from his maulvi sahib, but he didn't remember. He insists he always knew that.
