Women in ads are sex objects. Do you think they're being shown for their personality and intellectual abilities? lol.

Are we talking all pictures of attractive women in advertising? Or just ones with cleavage? Or only really steamy ones? What about pictures of attractive men? Would a hijabi in an ad be considered a sex object?

Everyone's got a different take on what constitutes modesty. Even for those that are very sexual, I wouldn't say reduce a woman to an object necessarily. The raciness, the pushing of boundaries may be used to grab attention, sometimes I'd agree in poor taste, but in others I wouldn't say that women are being 'objectified' per se any more than any person appearing in an ad.

In any case, the post I was referring to seemed to be portraying it as though it was a defining characteristic of Wester society. I can understand that if one were raised to believe that these elements were absolutely wrong - then that would be something that stands out as such. But to the rest of us who haven't been, it's not something that defines our culture.

i think the women in bruinrab's list are dressed very modestly. but i think what everyone is forgetting is that the article posted in the OP is about professional parties or dinners and evening outings.

of course women are going to dress professionally at the work place, or at least they should. and thats where the pictures of those 50 ladies were taken. but im going to bet that they were not dressed like and revealed alot more skin when invited to dinners and work outings.
And they're doing fine.

well like you said, i guess it all depends on what ones definition on what is considered a sex object. i personally think both women (hijabis and non hijabis alike) and men can be used as sexual objects simply by looking attractive (with or without a body being shown). i agree that its more appealing to look at someone with a pretty face than an ugly face when trying to sell something. but it just shows that beauty/sex is a really big factor in selling anything from cheese to a clothing item.

I've been to a number of professionally related events where I wore dressy desi clothes. In most cases, I'm been the most covered up woman there, but I still get plenty of compliments on my appearance - far more than the times where I wore halalified western clothes.

I think many women confuse elegance with exposure and grace with gaudiness.

I never understood those 90's Calvin Clein underwear adds they had of everywhere of sexy gay men in underpants. I mean really, do they think that kind of advertising really appealed to non-gay men? Shouldn't the add have been some super average looking guy with a beer gut in underpants surrounded by super hot women? Who do they want to buy their product anyway?
